Approve the Application for Prairieview School (Waukee Community Schools)-Monument
Sign Variance.Eric Rose,Director of Operations for Waukee Community Schools, addressed the
Commission.Because the property is located within the A-I Agricultural District which does not
permit monument signs, the school district is requesting a variance to allow construction of a
monument sign to identify Prairieview School.A letter of support from Gilcrest IJ ewett Lumber
Company was submitted to the Commission.Board member Phillips suggested rezoning school
property to a C-l [Community and Highway Service Commercial District]to permit monument signs
and avoid this situation in the future.Director ofPlauning Brad Deets explained that rezoning can be a
lengthy and complicated process and further stated that schools are not a permitted use within a
Commercial Zoning District.Mr.Rose said the school was told by staff that the variance process was
the avenue to get this type of thing approved and the process is not particularly difficult.Chairman
Oxenford reviewed the criteria to be met in order to gain approval for a variance,Motion by Board
Member Ellis, seconded by Board Member Phillips,to "Approve the Application of Prairieview
School (Waukee Community Schools)-Monument Sign Variance with Direction to the City staff to
