HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-02-25-Parks and Recreation Committee MinutesMinutes of WAUKEE PARKS COMMITTEE MEETING Tuesday,February 25,1997 7:00 PM Waukee Public Library PRESENT: Park committee Members Virginia Clark Marge Lause Anne McAtee Bill Spratt Tom Wilkerson Monica Lihs,City Council Representative Terry McNamara,City Buildings and Grounds John Wesselmann,Public Works Director Guests: Tom Dunn,AAU Team Representative Jeff Stanzuk,AAU Team Representative Henry Hyda,Waukee Girls'Softgall League Leighann Sullivan,Walnut Creek YMCA \ Representative Walnut Creek YMCA swim/Gym Program Leighann Sullivan,Health Enhancement Director of the Walnut Creek YMCA stated/that the Y had worked with the City of Waukee last summer to provide the swim/Gym program.The program will start the week after school lets out and will end the third week of August.It serves about 90 children each week.She would like to keep the cost to $1.00 per child per day.She is asking that the City of Waukee subsidize the program in the amount of $2,000.Moved by Marge Lause,2nd by Bill Spratt that we accept the YMCA offer of the program with the City of Waukee providing a flat fee of $2,000.Motion passed. * *AAU Braves TeamTomDunn,representative of AAU,requested the use of a ball field in Centennial Park.The field would be used by an AAU 9 year old team and a 12 year old team.They would use the field on Monday,Tuesday,Thursday,and Friday from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM and Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 from March 24 through June 30,1997.-Moved by Bill Sprat,2nd by Monica Lilla that the AAU bealmowed use of the east field in Centennial Park this year and we continue to work with the Waukee Girls'Softball League for their use of the fields for next year.Motion passed. Waukee Girls'Softball Program Henry Hyda,representing the Waukee Girls'Softball League,will continue to use the same fields east of the cemetery this year.He requests the use of two fields in Centennial Park next year. * Wildflower Valley A map showing the Steve Grubb Wildflower Valley development and proposed park land was discussed.Marge Lause moved that our mayor and city manager contact the Walnut Creek Little League and the City ofCl ive to get a 2BE agreement to allow access to theWildrloWer Valley potential parkland ofv: 4.46 acres.Motion was seconded by Monica Lihs.Motion carried. Lause moved that ~he Park Committee recommends that the City of Waukee accept the park land dedication from the Steve Grubb development in wildflower Valley on the condition that he extend the street to the park land from the south.Bill Spratt seconded the motion.Motion carried. * *Covered Bridge in Centennial Park The covered bridge in the southeast corner of Centennial Park is a project of the Waukee JayCees.The work of their installing the bridge still needs Lbo be done. Glenda Larsen and the Walnut Rainbow 4-H Club contacted the city with plans to plant flowers and landscape the bridge. It was suggested that the 4-H Club coordinate their wmrk with John and Terry and the Jay Cees. Monica reported that Pat pitts,a citizen of Waukee,is interested in painting the bridge. *Windfield ParkAnneMcAtee reported that trucks loaded with lumber have driven into Windfield Park and left deep ruts.John said that the company responsible has been contacted and that they will correct the damage. She also expressed the need fora walkway to the playground equipment that was installed in the park last fall.The equipment is not accessible because of the mud.John indicated that a walkway would be installed by April 1 when the parks officially open. Moved by Lause,seconded by McAtee that the meeting adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 9:20PM. The next regUlar meeting of the Park Committee will be Tuesday,March 25 at 7:00 PM at the Waukee Public Library. Virginia S.Clark,Secretary
