HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996-02-27-Parks and Recreation Committee MinutesMinutes of WAUKEE PARKS &RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING Tuesday,February 27,1996 7:00 PM Waukee Public Library PRESENT: Park Committee members: Virginia Clark Anne McAtee Bill Spratt Bob Trissel John Wesselmann,Public Works Director Terry McNamara,City Buildings &Grounds GUESTS: Mary Allen,Waukee Lions Lyn Schaefer,Business Association Dale Hilgenberg,JayCees Gary Dean,JayCees Dan Dutcher,Waukee Soccer Association Barry Paterson,Waukee Soccer Association *Waukee Soccer Dan Dutcher and Barry Paterson reported that there are 800 participants in the spring and fall soccer program.They have fields at the high school and Centennial Park and a land- lease agreement on fields a couple of miles west of town.While they have registration fee of $30 per individual and tournament fees,more money is needed for uniforms,paint,nets,and supplies. John Wesselmann asked them to present a list of specific needs and he would see how the Park Fund could help. Community Center There is a need in Waukee for a building to accommodate large meetings and receptions.John Wessellman presented his idea of a Community Center building located in Centennial Park, one that is winterized,has a full kitchen,and space for one large or two medium sized meeting rooms.The Lion's Club has been raising funds for a center,and the JayCees and Business Association said that they would present th~idea to their groups. It is hoped that with the cooperation of these and othercaommunity groups,such a building could be completed in a year or so. * *A copy of the Parks budget through the end of January 1996 was supplied. *Park Shelter House The fee to reserve the enclosed shelter house at Centennial Park is $15 for local groups and $50 for outside groups,with a deposit of $15,which is refunded if the shelter is left clean and ready for the next groups.John W.said that the deposit does not cover the cost of paying his help to come in on the week-end Park &Rec Minutes Page 2 February 27,1996 to check the shelter and pick up the garbage.There has been a problem with a resident reserving the shelter/for an outside group at the lower fee.The Park Committee recommended that the resident who reserves the building be present for the activity and that the group who reserves the shelter should remove their own garbage.The deposit fee for everyone should be raised and that the out-of-town charge for the shelter be increased. *Christmas Decorations Most of the Christmas decorations displayed by the city are old and need to be replaced.$2000 has been budgeted Eor replacements.Lyn Schaefer from Classic Florist made some attractive wreaths last year and said that she would make some more at her cost.Terry M.said that the storage are~for the decorations has been improved. Fireworks Display John W.feels that Waukee has an excellent fireworks display for the 4th of JUly.$3500 was spent last year,$3800 is budgeted for this year. * *Windfield Park Approximately $5000 will be availabe for equipment for Windfield Park. *The meeting adjourned at 9:30 PM. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, the Waukee Public Library. March 26 at 7:00 PM at Virginia S.Clark,Secretary
