HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-03-25-Parks and Recreation Committee MinutesMinutes of WAUKEE PARKS COMMITTEE MEETING Tuesday,March 25,1997 7:00 PM Waukee Public Library PRESENT: Park Committee Members Virginia Clark Linda Foltz Dan Gardiner Marge Lause Bill Spratt Monica Lihs,City Council.Representative John Wesselmann ,Public Works Director Guests: Mykee Levitt,Interested Citizen Dan Dutcher,Waukee Soccer Club Representative Monica Lihs called the meeting to order. The agenda was approved. The minutes of the February meeting were read.Bill Spratt moved to correct the February minutes to read "The AAU Braves team will u~e the middle field in Centennial Park".The minutes were approved as corrected. Activity Night for Middle3School Age Group Mykee Levitt said that she had lived in a community where every Friday night from 6:30PM to 11:OOPM the school gym or community center was available for planned activities for young people of the middle school age.She felt that there is nothing for this age group to do in Waukee and would encourage the Park Committee to institute a similar program.She said she would help to organize it and would find others to help. * Soccer Club Reguest for Bleachers Dan Dutcher,representing the Waukee Soccer Club,presented a request for the donation of 3 sets of bleachers from the ball fields in Centennial Park to the Soccer Club.The Park Committee recommended that one or possibly two set of bleachers be located by the soccer field at Centennial Park.The bleachers cannot be moved to the soccer fields west of Waukee,which are outside of the city limits. * *New Park Committee Members Mayor Bailey has appointed Linda Foltz,220 Parkview Drive and Dan Gardiner,195 Terrace.Drive to serve on the Waukee Parks Committee.They are a welcome addition to the committee. Community Center Terry McNamara has studied the grant under which Centennial Park was built in the early 1970's.There are restrictions that would prevent a community center heing built in the park.Terry and John will write a letter to the Lions Club explaining these restrictions. * Fourth of July Celebration Monica Lihs reported that the Community Betterment Committee plans to host the 4th of July cele~ration.So~e events and the sponsors include:5 mile run,Boy Scouts; Parade,JayCees;barbeque and ice cream social,Christian Church;fireworks,Waukee firemen.Monica asked how the Parks committee could be involved.Bill Spratt and Dan Gardiner will organize a Slow-pitch Softball Tournament.It will be co-ed and double elimination,involving 8 teams.Linda Foltz will contact the Booster Club to help organize a sand volley ball tournament. * YMCA Update The YMCA of Greater Des Moines and the Waukee Community School have been having some joint planning meetings regarding recreation programs and facilities in our community.The school will nold some informational forums in the fall of 1997 concerning the 2nd phase of building at the new high school site. A bond issue will be held in 1998 and in 1999 there will be an addition to the building that will include more classrooms and a recreational area to be used Dp the community and the school. The City of Waukee pledges support for a joint recreational facility of the school and the YMCA.At this time the City could not support financially the construction of such a project. At a later date it could possibly budget some funds for the operation of the YMCA in our community. * Moved by Marge Lause,seconded by Dan Gardiner that the meeting adjourn.Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM.
