WAUKEE PARKS &RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING

Use of Little League fields atcCentennial Park
Since the Little League fields will be used only as
pracitce fields by the Little League,it was suggested that
adult/coed softball teams be organized as a league,with games
and a tournament.Also,consider sand volley ball teams and
tournaments.

*Trees Forever
Trees Forever is a program that utility companies,
in cooperation with local communities,fund tree planting to
save energy and the environment.It was suggested that a
representative of Trees Forever be invited to present the aspects
of the program at the nest meeting.
*Park land at the end of 4th Street
The city has some land at the end of 4th Street from
the developers of Westfield and Windsor West.An individual
was interested in buying it to build a home.The Park Committee
advised against the sale and will ask the city attorney for a
legal interpretation of the sale of park land.
*YMCA
A representative of the Walnut Creek YMCA met with
the city administrator and John Wesselmann to discuss the
possibility of setting up a summer recreational program in
Waukee.Tae Park Committee is aware that the one week program
that has been provided in the summer is inadequate.Further
discussion is suggested fo find the scope and cost of such a
summer program,one that would include recreational swimming.
Community Betterment Committee
Monica Lihs,who is council representative of this
committee,indicated that they had not had their initial meeting.
After that meeting she will report regardirig the goals and
direction of the committee.

*Park Development
Terry McNamara provided a drawing that accurately
designates the Windfield Park area.There was discussion of
what should be included in this park.Terry will present a
drawing with these inclusions and their possible locations at
the next meeting.
*Grant Applications
Additional money is needed to develop our parks and
recreational areas.A REAP Grant is a possibility.Such a
grant could be for as much as $75,000.The committee encouraged
application for any possible grants.
High School--Phase 2
The administration of the city,the Waukee School,
and the YMCA are discussing the possibility of a joint effort
in the phase 2 of the new high school,one that would include
a swimming pool,an enlarged gym area and a weight room for
school and community use.

*Centennial Park Clean-up Day--April 20
Encourage advance sign-up at the library and city hall.
Meet April 20 at the enclosed shelter house at 9:30 to get
assignments.Bring gloves,rakes and paint brushes.Lunch will
be provided.
Representatives of the Park Committee will meet with
the Lions Club on April 8 and with the Business Association on
April 16 to discuss a proposed community center.
An extra meeting of the Park Committee will be held on
April 18 at 7:00 PM at the Waukee Public Library to do final
planning for the Clean-up Day.
*The meeting adjourned at 9:30 PM.
*The next regUlar meeting of the Park Committee will be
Tuesday,April 23 at 7:00 PM at the Waukee PUblic Library.
