HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-04-22-Parks and Recreation Committee MinutesMinutes of WAUKEE PARKS COMMITTEE MEETING Tuesday,April 22,1997 7:00 PM Wauke~Public Library PRESENT: Park Committee Members Virginia Clark Linda Foltz Dan Gardiner Marge Lause Anne McAtee Bill Spratt Tom Wilkerson Monica Lihs,City Council Representative Terry McNamara,City Buildings &Grounds John Wesselmann,Public Works Director Guests: Gordon Doerr,Waukee Lions Club Wayne Guttenfelder,Waukee Lions Club Monica Lihs called the meeting to order. Moved by Lause,seconded by Wilkerson that the agenda and the minutes be arproved. *Project Mainstreet Award Waukee applied for and was awarded a Project Mainstreet Grant of $1,500 that is sponsored by Casey's stores and station KCCI.On April 30 at 6:00 PM KGCI will present the award at the project site of the covered bridge in Centennial Park. Waste Management Donation Waste Management donated $100 to the City of Waukee in honor of Earth Day.The Park Committee requested that the money be put in the park budget. * *Dallas County susguecentennial Fund The Dallas County Susquecentennial Fund has been closed out and the remaining money distributed to the towns in the county.Waukee received $56.37,which will go to the park budget. *YMCA/SchoolTheCity of Waukee supports the YMCA and the Waukee Community School in their cooperative venture of facilities and wrogram,but can make no financial eommittment to the effort. Community Center Wayne Guttenfelder and Gordon Doerr,representing the Waukee Lions Club,reviewed their plans for a community center and their need for approximatelJ2 acres of land,possiblY in Centennial Park.Since the park was partially funded with the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund Program,there are restrictions regarding the use of the park and buildings in the park.John said there was a possibility of acquiring land from * Park Camm.Minutes Page 2 April 22,1997 David Conn,land which lies across Warrior Lane at the southwest corner of Centennial Park.This acquisition would connect to the two acre Songbird Park and might meet the conversion requirements of the LWCF.A committee will meet with Lisa Cooper to consider the requirements regarding building the community center in the park and complete the necessary forms for the conversion process. *Trianqle Park The Waukee Business Association will donate $3,000 toward the improvement of the appearance of Triangle Park in the center of town.John said improvements could include new curbs,a new drinking fountain,additional sidewalks,some benches,and treating and sealing the gazebo.Moved by McAtee,seconded by Lause that John draft plans to present to the Business Association to receive the $3,000. *Windfield Park The Courtyard Crew,the garden club from the Waukee Elementary School,planted 10 trees in Windfield Park.The trees were received from the Iowa Susquecentennial Commission in cooperation with Trees Forever and Earl May Nursery,for recognition of volunteer efforts during the Susquecentennial.Harold Forret of the Dallas County Committee and Kay Swan of the State Susque- centennial Committee were there for the dedication of the trees. 4th of July Softball Tournament Dan Gardiner and Bill Spratt will organize a co-ed softball tournament to be played Friday and Saturday,July 4 &5 as a part of the 4th of July celebration.They will draw up plans and details of the tournament and will present them at the May meeting. Linda Foltz contacted the Booster Club to determine interest in planning a volleyball tournament during the 4th of July celebration.They will notify the Park Committee if they plan to do this. * *Summer Workers in the Park John reported that two persons will be hired to work in the parks this summer.They must be at least 18 years of age and will be paid $7.50 an hour. Moved by Foltz,seconded by Lause that the meeting adjourn. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM. The next regular meeting of the Park Committee will be May 27 at 7:00 PM at the Waukee Public Library.
