Embree Edgington,School Board Member Lisa Cooper,Iowa Heartland Resourse,Conservation & Development Coordinator Chet Chedester,Mayor Kurt Rueckel,City Manager Terry McNamara,City,Buildings &Grounds Lonnie Waknitz,Girls'Soft Ball Representative Dan Gardiner,Little League Representative *REAP Grant The Waukee Eason Elementary School has planned a project for the development of their 23 acre grounds,entitled A ~ourney into ECology.The City of Waukee was asked to cooperate with the school in the application of a REAP Grant throbgh'bhe·iDep~r'fu~nt· of Natural Reaources to help fund tbis project.The REAP Grant in the amount of $31,500 was granted.The City is concerned that the contract gives them financial responsibilities in carrying out the project.Representatives of the school and the Resourtce Conservation ana u~velopment cooralnatOr were on nana to ClarIfy some of tge language of the contract.Dr.Stalker stated that there is a DOM agreement in which the school will assume all responsibility for the development,operation and maintainence of the project. *GIRLS'SOFT BALL Lonnie Waknitz,Girls'Soft Ball Representative,discussed the condition of the 4 fields that are adjacent to the cemetery. They are used by 11 teams,3 T-Ball,4 Minors and 4 Majors.He wants to improve the infield of 2 of the fields,using a combination of ag lime and masonery sand.John W.said that 15 T.of each would be adequate and that the work will be done in the spring. John said a sp.l sterilant would be used under the bleachers and along the fences to control plant growth.He said that he would fence the outfield with black plastic mesh and repair the bleachers. The soft ball season runs from the end of March t6 the first or second week of June. Park &Rec Minutes Page 2 October 24,1995 *LITTLE LEAGUE Dan Gardiner,the Waukee Little League Representative, stated that Waukee is switching from the South Dallas County Little League to the Walnut Creek Little League.The Walnut Creek organization includes Clive,Windsor Heights and West Des Moines.Dan indicated that a survey had heen mailed to the Waukee Little League families and a strong majority favored joining Walnut Creek.The Little League fields in Centennial Park will be used as practice fields and,if needed,for games. An adult soft ball league might be formed to use one of these fields. *VOLLEY BALL LEAGUE Chet Chedester reported that there is a co-ed volley ball league that plays every Sunday afternoon at the Middle School gym,from 12:30 to 5:30,during the month of November through March.The league includes 12 teams,with 10 teams playing each Sunday. *DEVELOPERS /PARK LAND OR MONEY Kurt Rueckel said that the Park Committee needs to indicate whether the developers of two areas,Country Club Woods and the Jeff Downing Development,should contribute land or money, and if land,in which part of the development it should be located. *ICE SKATING RINK The location of the ice skating rink will be changed from the sand volley ball court to the west Little League field.The infield will be enclosed with hay bales and a durable re-usable liner installed.This will create a larger rink.A new movable warming house will be built. *HALLOWEEN HIKE It was decidea to plan a Halloween Hike to be hela on ¥r1day and Saturday,Uct.LI &L~,1n Centenn1al Park,trom/:UU-Y:3U PM. Four planning meetings were held during October.IndiViduals were contactea to help by be1ng story tellers or to be at one of the stat1ons.members at the two women's Clubs baked cooK1es for the treat saCKS,and Dorotny wooas provlded candy.Some high school students and members of the ST.Boniface Confirmation class acted as guides.Lynn of Classic Floral and park comm.members decorated the shelter house and hosted the activity at the end of the hike.John W. arranged for the cider and apples.John W.and Terry M.worked hard on the physical lay-out of the hike,obtaining or making the "accessories"needed along the trail. *The next regular meeting will be held on the fourth Tuesday, November 28th,at 7:00 PM at the Waukee Public Library.
