HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996-03-21-Development Committee Regular MinutesMEETING OF THE WAUKEE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE -MARCH 21,1996 The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM. Members present:Mayor Bailey,Councilman Lugar,Debra Rolek,Jeff Downing,and Ray Clark Also present and taking minutes was Kurt Rueckel. The Committee discussed what form of organization they should become:a corporation,a commission, or a committee.A committee would make only make recommendations to the city council,a commission would be a part of the city,but an independent body like the Library Board,and a corporation would be a totally separate entity.The committee moved to form a commission.The motion passed 5-0. Jeff Downing suggested that Dr.Stalker be invited to be a member. The Committee discussed that they should start looking at what is out east ofthe interstate that could/should add another location in Waukee since there is so little west of the interstate.It was suggested that they look at stores like Target,Walmart,Venture,etc.,amongst others. ,The Mayor mentioned to the committee that he wold be meeting with the Mayor of Ade1 and Joe Reece of Dallas County in later April about the possibilty of a furture joint Airport effort.Kurt Rueckel mentioned that an airport was in the long range development plans for the city of Waukee. The Committee also discussed how the focus of the committee should also be on keeping what the community has here and keeping the business we have.Deb Rolek suggested that we do a survey in the next Waukee Taukee to the residents about what the residents would like to see out here,income levels,etc. The Committee then discussed how many members should be on the committee.After a brief discussion motion by Rolek,second by Lugar to recommend to have 15 members on the Commission, and to invite Dr.Stalker or at school representative to be a member. The Committee also discussed the formation of an ambassador group to welcome new businesses and to respond to companies who are showing an interest in the City,or which the city wants to attract. Dan Lugar talked about how it was important that the city be well perceived by the community,especially the developers.Jeff Downing stated that the city's perception was perceived as so-so -that it does well in some areas and not in others.Dan suggested that the City Council should try to always try be cooperative and reasonable and to use common sense when working with developers and businesses. The committee also discussed doing one on one interviews much like the Des Moines Chamber does.The City could find out what it needs to work on and also what it is doing well. Motion by Clark,second by Lugar to adjourn at 8:52.Motion passed 5-0.
