HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-05-05-Resolutions 14-112_Alice's Rd - Street Name-Park-Historic DistrictTHE CITY OF WAUKEE,IOWA RESOLUTION 14-112 RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE LEGACY OF ALICE NIZZI AND NAMING OF A ROADWAY,PARK AND HISTORIC DISTRICT IN HER HONOR IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE,IOWA WHEREAS,Alice Nizzi owned and operated Alice's Spaghetti Land Restaurant in the former mining camps area near Waukee from 1947 to 1994;AND WHEREAS,Alice Nizzi's restaurant was known throughout the country and served all manner of customers,from celebrities to coal miners;AND WHEREAS,Alice Nizzi had the character to open and operate a thriving business in an era when it was very uncommon for women to do so;AND WHEREAS,Alice Nizzi has a unique place in Waukee's history that should be remembered; AND WHEREAS,the roadway that guided customers from Highway 6/Hickman Road to Alice's Spaghetti Land was unofficially called "Alice's Road";AND WHEREAS,the entire area from Highway 6/Hickman Road to Meredith Drive includes the site of the two coal mines,the mining family homes and the restaurant;AND WHEREAS,new residential development in the area will create opportunities to honor Alice Nizzi's legacy;AND WHEREAS,it is the desire of the Mayor and City Council to recognize and honor Alice Nizzi's contribution to Waukee and the area. NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED,that the City Council of the City of Waukee hereby recognizes and honors the contributions of Alice Nizzi to the community,culture and heritage of the City of Waukee and the surrounding area.Her success as a woman in owning and operating Alice's Spaghetti Land served as an inspiration for all and assisted in changing societal views of the time.Her restaurant served as a popular meeting place for members of the community, congressmen,candidates,celebrities,miners,and weary travelers from near and far to gather for a meal,exchange stories,see co-workers,friends and family.Her contributions are part of the rich history of Waukee and the area and shall not be forgotten. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the roadway known as Alice's Road from University Avenue to the Northern Corporate Limits be officially named "Alice's Road."In addition,City staff is directed to pursue an agreement with the City of Clive to officially name "Alice's Road" from the Northern Corporate limit of Waukee to Meredith Dr.in the corporate limits of Clive. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the area on the southwest comer of the future intersection of Douglas Parkway and Alice's Road will include a park which when developed shall be named "Alice Nizzi Park."The Mayor will appoint a committee with the charge to form the "Alice Nizzi Historic Area,"participate in the design of the park,and develop methods of memorializing and communicating to park goers,and the public,the accomplishments of Alice Nizzi and her importance to the history of the area.City Staff shall include $400,000.00 of funding for the development of the park in the proposed Capital Improvement Program (CIP)for 2015-2019. Passed by the City Council of the City of Waukee,Iowa,and approved thi 2014.
