AGENDA ITEM:Consideration of approval of a motion setting date and time for
appointment to fill a vacant seat on the Waukee City Council
FORMAT:Motion
SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: It is anticipated that the City Council will approve a
motion to fill Courtney Clarke’s vacant council seat by appointment for
the remainder of her unexpired term (12/31/2021).
In order to comply with State law, the City Council must select a date for
a meeting at which they will appoint to fill the vacancy. State law also
mandates that a notice must be published no less than four (4) and no
more than twenty (20) days prior to the date established for appointment.

STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: City staff recommends one of two timelines for the
appointment process:
A)Solicitation of applications
a.01/13-01/24: applications accepted
b.01/23: Notice of Intention to Appoint published in
newspaper
c.01/27: applications provided to mayor and council for
review
d.02/04 at 5:30 p.m.: special council meeting to conduct
interviews
e.02/10: special council meeting to approve appointment
f.02/18: new council member sworn in
B)Limiting selection to the two candidates who ran for council in
2019
a.01/16: Notice of Intention to Appoint published in
newspaper
b.01/20: special council meeting (immediately following
regular meeting) to conduct interviews
c.01/27: special council meeting to approve appointment
d.02/03: new council member sworn in
RECOMMENDATION: Approve a motion setting the date and time for appointment.
