RESOLUTION 2020-
APPROVING JOB DESCRIPTION
[PUBLIC EDUCATION & PREVENTION COORDINATOR]
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA
WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal
Organization; AND,
WHEREAS, the Fire Chief proposes the creation of a Public Education & Prevention
Coordinator position; AND,
WHEREAS, the addition of the position of Public Education & Prevention Coordinator was
approved as part of the FY21 budget process; AND,
WHEREAS, the Fire Chief and Human Resource Director recommend establishing the position
and approving the job description.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa on
this 23rd day of March, 2020, that it hereby approves the job description and pay grade for Public
Education & Prevention Coordinator, Fire Department.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Public Education & Prevention Coordinator Reports to: Fire Marshal
Dept/Div: Fire Direct Reports: None
Union Status: Represented - CWA FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Grade: GS-12
JOB PURPOSE: Under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal, delivers public education and
coordinates fire prevention programs and activities. Assists with comprehensive technical
inspections of buildings and property as directed and/or as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.)
1. Provides public education programs, community relations activates and other emergency response related
activities for schools, the public, and businesses as assigned.
2. Educates the public on fire safety/prevention by providing presentations at daycares, schools, businesses
and community organizations and answering questions from the general public.
3. Develops and implements initiatives designed to reduce the risk of fires and other related emergencies.
4. Assures that all work performed meets the City’s and Fire Department’s standards for customer service,
accuracy, quality and efficiency.
5. Assures that the City’s and Fire Department’s mission, goals and objectives are fully supported and
initiated.
6. Responds in a timely manner to inquiries and questions related to questions, concerns and complaints
regarding construction, safety/code concerns in buildings and the community, and public education
requests.
7. Conducts fire and life safety inspections as assigned, smoke detector installs, battery replacements and
other duties as assigned.
8. Prepares required paperwork and reports including the development of pre-fire plans, and plan reviews and
walk-thru meetings as assigned.
9. Assists with inspections of new construction and renovation projects, ensuring correct interpretation and
enforcement of established fire codes, ordinances, and regulations.
10. Assists with certifying required alarm tests, sprinkler system tests, fixed system tests, fire pump acceptance
tests and related activities.
11. Responds to fire and rescue calls as needed or directed and performs,within the directives, policies,
SOG’s, and protocols of the department.
12. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

8. Actively support all efforts to increase cooperation, communication, and collaboration between and among
departments, full-time and part-time on-call fire fighters and the community.

9. Knowledge of local and national fire codes, building construction, fire behavior and fire prevention concepts
and methodologies.
10. Demonstrate sound time-management skills by effectively or efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and
completing multiple assignments in a timely manner.
11. Operates with the safety of themselves, their co-workers, and the general public in mind at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
2. Firefighter I (IFSAC), Hazardous Materials Operations (IFSAC) certifications and two (2) years’ experience
OR two (2) years’ experience in public education, inspecting, designing, or maintaining fire protection
systems, or code enforcement.
3. Firefighter II (IFSAC) certification within one year from date of hire.
4. CPR Instructor certification within one year from date of hire.
5. Fire Inspector certification within one year from date of hire.
6. Fire Instructor I (IFSAC) within 18 months from date of hire. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License
and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to pass the Waukee Physical Agility Test at any time during employment.
2. Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, reach, stand, walk, drive, push, lift, grasp, feel, talk and
hear.
3. Able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds.
4. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment.
5. Able to operate and use all fire department equipment and apparatus.
6. Responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may
be encountered.
2. Will be exposed to darkness and poor lighting, fumes/odors, isolation, moving machinery, noise, visual
strain, unprotected heights, wearing a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus, working on
uneven ground, mechanical hazards, biological hazards, medical hazards, electrical hazards, traffic
hazards, possible explosion, and bodily injury.
3. Will be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus.
4. May be exposed to highly stressful or adverse situations.
5. Standard work hours must be flexible, will include days, evenings, and weekends, may be greater than 40
hours per week, and may be called to report to duty at any time.
