HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-08-03-I12 Encouraging Public Health Practices During PandemicCITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA CITY COUNCIL MEETING COMMUNICATION MEETING DATE: August 3, 2020 AGENDA ITEM:Consideration of approval of a resolution encouraging public health practices in the City of Waukee during the coronavirus pandemic FORMAT:Resolution SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: The resolution is proposed in response to continued increases in positive COVID-19 cases in both Dallas and Polk Counties, as well as recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the use of face masks and social distancing as ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19. FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: COMMISSION/BOARD/COMMITTEE COMMENT: STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: The proposed resolution encourages but does not mandate the use of face coverings. Proposed Resolution PREPARED BY:Becky Schuett REVIEWED BY: PUBLIC NOTICE INFORMATION – NAME OF PUBLICATION: DATE OF PUBLICATION: AGENDA ITEM: I12 THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA RESOLUTION 2020- ENCOURAGING PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICES IN THE CITY OF WAUKEE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal Organization; AND, WHEREAS, on March 9, 2020, the Honorable Governor Kim Reynolds declared a state of public health disaster emergency in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19); AND, WHEREAS, on March 13, 2020, President Donald J. Trump issued a proclamation declaring the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States a national emergency; AND, WHEREAS, many cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the State of Iowa, the number of cases continues to grow, and reports warn of an increase in cases through the fall and winter; AND, WHEREAS, social distancing, increased hand washing and the use of face coverings are consistent with recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Dallas County Health Department as effective means to prevent the spread of COVID-19; AND, WHEREAS, the City of Waukee is taking steps at all City facilities to protect the health of employees, residents and visitors, including the closure of City buildings to public access and requiring the use of face coverings during any interactions with the public; AND, WHEREAS, the City of Waukee encourages individuals in the City to comply with recommended public health practices and encourages businesses throughout Waukee to explore similar measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and help keep businesses operational. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee that everyone is encouraged to socially distance and wear face coverings when in the proximity of other persons and that these practices continue until substantial progress in curbing the spread of COVID-19 has been declared by public health officials.
