AGENDA ITEM:Consideration of approval of a resolution approving job description and pay
grade for Marketing & Communications Specialist
FORMAT:Resolution
SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: As the City of Waukee continues to grow, the amount and
complexity of marketing initiatives and communication with residents, media,
the business community and the general public do, as well. Adding this
position would allow for upkeep and improvement of day-to-day marketing
and communications functions while also freeing up staff time for strategizing
long-term plans, assessment of existing tools and resources, and development
of new initiatives. This position would also dedicate time to the Community &
Economic Development Department to ensure all Waukee site selection
information is current.

STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: The Marketing & Communications Director and Human
Resource Director recommend approval of the creation of a new position and
job description for the position of Marketing & Communications Specialist.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the resolution.

APPROVING JOB DESCRIPTION AND PAY GRADE
[MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST]
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA
WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal
Organization; AND,
WHEREAS, the Marketing and Communications Director proposes the creation of a non-
represented, full-time Marketing and Communications Specialist position; AND,
WHEREAS, the pay grade for the position shall be Grade N18; AND,
WHEREAS, the Marketing and Communications Director and Human Resource Director
recommend establishing the position and approving the job description and pay grade.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa on
this 20th day of February, 2018, that it hereby approves the job description and pay grade for
Marketing and Communications Specialist.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Marketing & Communications Specialist Reports to: Marketing & Comm. Director
Dept/Div: Marketing & Communications Direct Reports: None
Union Status: Non-Represented FLSA Status: Non Represented
Grade: N18
JOB PURPOSE: The Marketing & Communications Specialist is the personal assistant to the Marketing &
Communications Director providing technical support in developing and implementing
creative multi-channel marketing and communications strategies to enhance and promote
the City of Waukee’s brand positioning and to inform various audiences of City information
and news.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.)
1. Performs duties of personal assistant to the Marketing and Communications Director.
2. Provides administrative support to the Community & Economic Development Department as assigned.
3. Performs day-to-day maintenance of the City’s website, including updates to (Geographic Information
System (GIS) and Location One Information System (LOIS) information on the Economic Development
webpage.
4. Responsible for oversight of City social media accounts (eg Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram).
5. Assists in planning, writing and managing print and electronic newsletters.
6. Writes and proofreads copy.
7. Serves as backup media relations contact.
8. Participates in event photography and videography, photo and video editing, and video production.
9. Designs web graphics, brochures, ads and other content.
10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Graphic Design, Marketing, Communications or a related field.
2. At least one (1) year of experience in a related field; preference will be given to candidates with marketing,
journalism and/or design experience.
3. Experience with website content management and publication of communication materials.
4. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite applications with an understanding and eye for graphic design and video
production.
5. Knowledge of current social media practices.

6. Knowledge of journalistic writing and Associated Press (AP) Style.
7. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving work areas
and office equipment.
2. Ability to sit for long period of time and to maintain focus on project such as computer screen or detailed
paperwork.
3. Able and willing to carry camera gear while walking varying distances.
4. Able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 20 pounds occasionally.
5. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic
devices and handwritten) with other employees and City contacts in English.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required.
2. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards.
3. Standard work hours will be Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM and position may
include meetings, presentation and events during weekends and evenings.
4. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within the Waukee City Hall.
5. There is no residency requirement for this position.
