HomeMy WebLinkAboutFinance - Accounting Intern Page 1 Accounting Intern Council Approved 4-11-2022 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Accounting Intern Reports to: Accounting Manager Dept/Div: Finance Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: Limited PT/Seasonal/Intern FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Accounting Intern supports the finance department by completing related tasks and specifically managing the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions of the department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Generates various Council reports including bill lists for Council approval. 2. Prepares monthly Treasurer’s Report for publication and department revenue and expenditure budget reports. 3. Verifies vendor invoices, enters them into payables system, generates checks and ensures timely distribution of payments. 4. Assists with the preparation of City records, schedules and work papers for annual audit and assists the auditors as needed. 5. Manages the accounts receivable system with all departments ensuring invoices are issued and collected and files liens as necessary. 6. Prepares utility, building permit, accounts receivable, miscellaneous and property tax deposits. 7. Processes online credit card transactions. 8. Processes daily golf course deposits and transactions, tracking sales by category and taxable status and assists with establishing procedures for daily cash balancing. 9. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy, and speed, while under the pressure of time sensitive deadlines. 7. Relates to routine operations in a manner that is consistent with existing solutions to problems; to conform to established policies and procedures. 8. Develops and maintains good relationships with other city departments. 9. Continually seeks and accepts opportunities for personal and professional growth. 10. Attentive to the City’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City policies and procedures ensuring that all work meets those standards. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Internship is open to current high school students, juniors and above with plans to pursue a career in a finance or accounting related filed, undergraduate or graduate students. 2. Detail oriented with a focus on accuracy. 3. Excellent problem solving and analytical skills. 4. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in finance software required to complete the functions of the position. Page 2 Accounting Intern Council Approved 4-11-2022 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and move about the office; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to speak, hear and see in order to share information, receive instructions and complete tasks using a computer screen. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment. 2. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional evening and weekend hours as required. I have read and understand the information contained in the Job Description.
