SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: Job description for a Recreation Coordinator has been
created at the pay grade of N15.

STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: The City Administrator, Human Resource Director and Parks
& Recreation Director recommend the approval of the job description and pay

RESOLUTION 2022-
APPROVING JOB DESCRIPTION AND PAY GRADE
[RECREATION COORDINATOR]
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA
WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal
Organization; AND,
WHEREAS, the City Administrator, Parks and Recreation Director and Human Resources
Director propose the creation of a Recreation Coordinator job description; AND,
WHEREAS, the pay grade for the position shall be N15; AND,
WHEREAS, the City Administrator and Human Resource Director recommend establishing the
job description and approving the job description and pay grade.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa on
this 21st day of November 2022 that it hereby approves the job description and pay grade for
Recreation Coordinator.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Recreation Coordinator Reports to: Assistant Parks & Recreation Director
Dept/Div: Parks & Recreation/Recreation Direct Reports: Seasonal staff, volunteers
Pay Grade: N15 FLSA Status: Exempt
JOB PURPOSE: The Recreation Coordinator will create, plan, organize and supervise recreational
programs, leagues and special events for a variety of age groups.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.)
1. Designs, develops, coordinates, implements, evaluates, and as necessary, works recreational activities
and events for the City.
2. Monitors revenues and expenditures within assigned areas to ensure sound fiscal control.
3. Utilizes electronic software to oversee registration for scheduled events and programs, assists participants
in the registration process, accounts for registrations and payments for programs and events, maintains
registration records and reviews registration materials and rosters.
4. Assists with hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating of seasonal staff.
5. Recruits and coordinates volunteers for programs, leagues and special events.
6. Interacts with parents, caregivers, guardians, children, program participants, instructors, coaches, youth
associations, community organizations, civic groups and others regarding programs, events and activities
via telephone, email, in-person and social media.
7. Assists in setting program fees, establishing program budgets and complying with City and department
revenue policies. Assists in compilation of applicable reports and budgets.
8. Maintains awareness of new developments in the field of recreation; incorporates new developments as
appropriate into programs.
9. Assists with the preparation of department brochures and publications.
10. Regular attendance and the ability to work evenings and weekends is essential for this position.
11. Ensures compliance with department and City policies, rules and regulations.
12. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or a related field.
2. A minimum of 6 months increasingly responsible related experience preferred.
3. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License within 30 days and meet the requirements of the City’s motor
vehicle policy.
4. Current CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from administration, staff, colleagues,
elected officials and the general public.
2. Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and
office equipment.
3. Able to sit or stand for long periods of time while maintaining focus.
4. Be responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress.
5. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using
electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment.
2. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation and the results of weather and nature may
be encountered.
3. Position requires travel within and outside of the City, which imposes common travel hazards.
4. Standard work hours must be flexible and include evenings and weekends and will be greater than 40
hours per week for a large percentage of the year.
5. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30-minute radius of the City limits due to the
need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of the
citizens of Waukee.
