FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: COMMISSION/BOARD/COMMITTEE COMMENT: STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: The Assistant Library Director and Human Resource Director recommend the approval of the job description and pay. Job Description – Children’s Librarian Intern PREPARED BY:Michelle Lindsay REVIEWED BY: I1F THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA RESOLUTION 2024- APPROVING JOB DESCRIPTION AND PAY [CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN INTERN] IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal Organization; AND, WHEREAS, the Assistant Library Director proposes the creation of a Children’s Librarian Intern job description; AND, WHEREAS, the position of Children’s Librarian Intern shall be placed on the Limited Part Time/Seasonal/Intern Compensation plan; AND, WHEREAS, the position of Children’s Librarian Intern job description and pay was approved by the Library Board on October 8, 2024; AND, WHEREAS, the Assistant Library Director and Human Resource Director recommend establishing the position and approving the job description and pay. Charles Bottenberg Chris Crone Rob Grove Anna Bergman Pierce Ben Sinclair Children’s Librarian Intern Page 1 Board Approved 10/8/2024 Council Approved 10/21/2024 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Children's Librarian Intern Reports to: Assistant Director – Library Department: Library Direct Reports: None Pay Range: FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: Under the general direction of the Assistant Director - Library, plans and implements with children’s programs, interacts with library patrons to provide information, assists patrons in locating materials, using computer online catalog and other media products ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Assists with planning, presenting and evaluating diverse and creative services and programs for all ages of children and their caregivers that promote literacy and creativity. 2. Conducts engaging and energetic story time programs for groups of children in the library and may include offsite and outside locations. 3. Provides quality customer service, readers' advisory, new patron orientation and ongoing patron education, and answers reference questions as able for all patrons. 4. Assists the Assistant Director – Library with management of children's collection by organizing and weeding assigned materials in accordance with library policies and budget. 5. Assists with or fills in for teen programming as needed. 6. Works with volunteers, explaining tasks and locating supplies. 7. Assists with development of youth-oriented content for website and social media outlets. 8. Assists with locating materials in order to fill hold requests. 9. Performs other duties or assume other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Demonstrate a positive attitude, and cultural sensitivity in working with a diverse public and coworkers. 5. Working knowledge of current electronic devices, internet tools, social media and library related technology and trends, and the ability to embrace the challenge of continuously learning new tools, software, and technology to meet typical library needs. 6. Demonstrate sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner. 7. Demonstrate a working knowledge of library science principles and practices. 8. Understand and internalize the importance of seeking resolution to problems and concerns by bringing them to the direct attention of supervisor in a timely manner. 9. Ability to exercise independent judgement to creatively solve problems and negotiate stressful situations in a positive manner. 10. Must be able to work some nights and weekends and to be flexible enough to switch when necessary. 11. Be attentive to the City's and the Library's standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City and Library policies and procedures. 12. Represent the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons. QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in library and information science, early childhood development or closely related field or 2. Public library work or customer experience preferred. 3. Exhibit considerable knowledge of the needs, developmental stages, and abilities of children. 4. Exhibit considerable knowledge of children's literature and materials. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. 2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Standard work hours include evenings and weekends. 3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within the Waukee Public Library building.
