HomeMy WebLinkAboutPW - Infrastructure Services Technician Infrastructure Services Technician Page 1 Council Approval ??/??/2025 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Infrastructure Services Technician Reports to: Infrastructure Superintendent Dept/Div: Public Works/Infrastructure Services Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: N26 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Infrastructure Services Technician is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and installation of critical infrastructure systems, including water, sanitary, stormwater, streets, streetlights, fiber optic conduits, and cemetery services. This role ensures the continuous and safe operation of these systems while responding to both routine and emergency situations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Performs work in a safe manner, complying with all applicable safety rules, regulations, and procedures while protecting self and others from injury. 2. Assists with the installation, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection systems, storm sewer collection system, and street pavement infrastructure. 3. Performs burial excavations and miscellaneous repairs and maintenance within the cemetery including landscaping, fencing, and monument upkeep. 4. Inspects and troubleshoots infrastructure systems, diagnosing issues, and performing necessary repairs or replacements. 5. Installs and maintains streetlight, fiber optic and traffic signal conduit systems, including the installation and repair of handholes and control cabinets ensuring proper functionality of the infrastructure. 6. Operates construction equipment such as backhoes, excavators, trenchers, skid steers and other machinery ensuring personal and team safety and operational efficiency. 7. Locates and marks underground facilities in accordance with industry standards and regulations. 8. Maintains accurate records of installations, repairs, and maintenance activities, ensuring documentation is up to date. 9. Responds to emergency calls for infrastructure-related issues, including water main breaks, sanitary and storm sewer backups, street repairs, traffic signal malfunctions, streetlight failure and cemetery maintenance concerns. 10. Assists with snow removal efforts when needed, including plowing and salting of public roadways and other infrastructure areas. Responds to emergency and on-call situations for any Public Works Division in a timely manner. 11. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Contribute to overall City effectiveness by providing critical staff support to task forces and by participating, as necessary, in assisting all other teams. 10. Attentive to the City’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City policies and procedures. 11. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in software required to complete the functions of the position. 12. Ability to read various maps, plats, and construction plans. 13. Able to perform basic arithmetic and keep accurate and complete records. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 2. Two years’ experience in public works or construction industry in a variety of disciplines preferred. 3. Must possess a valid Class B Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsements or ability to obtain within nine (9) months of hire and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. 4. Knowledge of construction techniques, safety practices, and equipment operation related to infrastructure maintenance and repair. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to regularly lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 75 pounds. 2. Able to move objects weighing over 100 pounds using assistive devices multiple times during the day. 3. Able to climb different types of ladders and stairs. 4. Able to enter and work in confined space with proper training and personal protective equipment (PPEs). 5. Must have an acute sense of smell to readily detect an unsafe environment. 6. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather. 7. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 2. Subject to on-call duties and emergency call-ins. 3. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed. 4. During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud. 5. Position requires travel within and outside of the City, which imposes common travel hazards. 6. Standard work hours will be Monday-Friday 7:00AM – 3:30PM with occasional hours including evenings, overnights, and weekends as required. 7. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Works Building. 8. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30-minute drivetime radius of the City limits due to the need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Waukee.
