AGENDA ITEM:A Resolution Terminating Lease with Waukee Post 11517 Veterans of
Foreign Wars (VFW) and Waukee Post 737 American Legion for Building at
410 6th Street
FORMAT:Resolution
SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: The City currently has a lease with the VFW and
American Legion for the 410 6th Street building. The is due to be demolished and reconstructed
starting in April, 2026. The space will be unavailable, so we were advised by legal council to
terminate the lease effective March 1, 2026. This will allow ample time for the veterans groups to
move their assets and arrange other meeting space.
FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: The existing lease is $1 per year,
so minimal impact

RESOLUTION 2025-
A RESOLUTION TERMINATING LEASE WITH WAUKEE POST 11517 VETERANS
OF FOREIGN WARS (VFW) AND WAUKEE POST 737 AMERICAN LEGION FOR
BUILDING AT 410 6TH STREET
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA
WHEREAS, the City of Waukee conducted a building assessment of all of its properties and the
building at 410 6th Street rated poorly and had several structural deficiencies; AND,
WHEREAS, in conversations with the city council, it was determined to hire SVPA Architects
to develop plans to demolish and reconstruct the building as a community center; AND,
WHEREAS, during the demolition and construction phases, the VFW and American Legion
will not be able to use the building as noted in their lease; AND,
WHEREAS, the March 1, 2026 termination date will give ample time to move assets out of the
existing building and find new meeting space; AND,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Waukee
formally terminates the lease with the Waukee VFW and Waukee American Legion effective
March 1, 2026 and empowers the Mayor to execute the agreement.
Passed by the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa, and approved the 17th day of
November, 2025.
