HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB - Technical Services ManagerCity of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Technical Services Manager Department: Library Pay Range: N28 FLSA Stats: Exempt Reports to: Assistant Library Director Direct Reports: Technical Services Librarian, occasionally other library staff JOB PURPOSE: The Technical Services Manager (TSM) manages and maintains the Integrated Library System (ILS), all library technology systems, website maintenance, oversees the cataloging and processing of library materials, and compiles library statistics and reports. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Works with Library Director to implement a strategic vision for the library’s technical services functions, including acquisitions, cataloging, processing, inventory, ILS, print management, and website maintenance. 2. Serves on the Library Management Team. Administers department procedures and policies to implement library goals and objectives and meets the needs of library patrons. 3. Responsible for the recruitment, training, professional development and performance evaluation of the Technical Services Assistant, while overseeing and guiding their day-to-day activities. 4. Coordinates with other departments in planning, developing, and maintaining efficient workflows for library operations. 5. Manages and maintains the library's Integrated Library System (ILS), print management system, and website to resolve issues, and works to improve functionality. 6. Serves as liaison between the library and automation vendors, sales representatives, and City technology staff to resolve technology issues, updates, upgrades, and replacements. 7. Develops, implements, and manages cataloging, processing, and mending procedures of library materials. 8. Develops, implements, and manages ILL and IA Shares programs. 9. Evaluates and suggests annual departmental budget; manage and comply with budget allotment. 10. Provides quality customer service, readers’ advisory, new patron orientation and ongoing patron education, and answers reference questions. 11. Occasionally serve as staff member in charge, providing leadership to address emergencies, safety issues, and patron feedback. 12. Assists with collection and online resources development and maintenance. 13. Compiles statistics and reports as directed. 14. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Acknowledges and accepts the Library's mission, respects the Library's confidentiality regulations, and maintains the integrity of the Waukee Public Library. 3. Maintains knowledge of current holdings and library resources, both print and electronic. 4. Ability to recognize and set priorities, plan, organize, implement, and evaluate system-wide projects. 5. Demonstrated success in interpersonal and communication skills. 6. Be comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories. Working knowledge of electronic services, Internet tools, social media and library related technology and trends, and the ability to embrace the challenge of continuously learning new tools, software, and technology to meet typical library needs. 8. Continually seeks and participates in opportunities for continuing education and professional growth. 9. Ability to conduct a reference interview and be able to answer reference questions with authority and tenacity to meet patron needs. 10. Improves the effectiveness and efficiency of all library operations with positive and creative approaches to challenges. 11. Demonstrates sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner. 12. Has a professional understanding of librarianship. 13. Understand and internalize the importance of seeking resolution to problems and concerns by bringing them to the direct attention of supervisor in a timely manner. 14. Be attentive to the City's and the Library's standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City and Library policies and procedures. 15. Represents the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bachelor's degree in library science or a related field required, master's degree in library science preferred. 2. Two years of public library work experience required, including experience maintaining library technology systems. 3. Supervisory experience preferred. 4. Comprehensive knowledge of current cataloging and classification standards. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1 Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. 2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Standard work hours include evenings and weekends. 3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within the Waukee Public Library building.
