RESOLUTION 03-102
APPROVING RIDE ALONG PROGRAM GUIDELINES
AND INDEMNIFYING RELEASE
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE,IOWA
WHEREAS,the Waukee Fire /Rescue Dept.,in the interest of cooperation and
education,offers opportunities to qualified individuals to experience a "ride-along"
involving emergency care response and patient contact;AND,
WHEREAS,these "qualified individuals"include EMT students (B,I or P),members of
the other civil service institutions,or interested members of the community;AND,
WHEREAS,all ride-along participants agree to the guidelines as established by the
Waukee Fire /Rescue Department;AND,
WHEREAS,all ride-along participants sign the Indemnifying Release prepared by City
Attorney Paul Huscher whereby each participant signing this release holds the City of
Waukee,Iowa,the Waukee Fire Department,the Waukee Police Department and all their
personnel harmless from any claims or demands of any persons arising out of the
individual's participation in the "ride-along"program.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Waukee City Council in
session this 5th day of May 2003 that it hereby approves the Ride-Along Guidelines and
Indemnifying Release.

RIDE ALONG PROGRAM GUIDELINES IWaukeeFire/Rescue Dept,iu the interest of cooperation and education,offers
opportunities to qualified individuals to experience a "ride-along"involving emergency
care response and patient contact."Qualified individuals"include EMT students (B,I or
P),members of other civil service institutions,or interested members of the community.
Ride-along participants agree to the following:
•The EMS ride-along program involves only ambulance operations.
Studentslriders are only permitted on 370.Under specific circumstances
riders may be pennitted to ride to or from a scene on other fire apparatus
as instructed by the preceptor.
•All riders will be assigned one (I)preceptor at the beginning of the shift.
This preceptor will take responsibility for the rider and will be a WFD
EMT-P or above.The preceptor will be involved in orienting the rider to
the ambulance and explaining ambulance operations as necessary,and in
clarifying the role of the rider.
•At no time will any rider be allowed on a fire scene.
•At no time will any rider be allowed to drive WFD apparatus.
•At no time will any rider be allowed to lift the cot from either the head or
foot ends.
•Riders who are allowed to participate in patient care include EMT
students.Any other rider is classified as "observation only".Students are
to perform skills under the direct supervision of the preceptor and are not
to deviate from scope of practice or protocol.The preceptor is
responsible for ensuring protocol compliance.
•Riders are to understand that all information is confidential.Sharing of
confidential information is grounds for legal repercussion.
•Riders are required to maintain a professional appearance and wear BSI
for any patient contact.Mercy students are required to wear the
appropriate uniform.
•All riders will sign a waiver ofliability and present a copy of their
personal health insurance and student ill/driver's license.
•All riders will be presented with a copy ofWFD blood borne pathogen
policy to review.Riders are expected to be compliant with this policy at
all times.
Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in immediate revocation of ride
along privileges.If the rider is a student,a letter of explanation may be sent to the
sponsoring institution.

Department,or the Waukee Police Department to any participation as a "ride-along"in or
with the City of Waukee,Iowa,Waukee Fire Department,or the Waukee Police
Department,hereby agrees as follows:
The undersigned agree(s)and understandfs)that there is risk of injury or damage
resulting from participation as a "ride-along,"and the undersigned assmne(s)all risks
associated with such participation.The undersigned further,as a condition of being
allowed to participate as a "ride-along,"release(s)s and discharge(s)City of Waukee,
Iowa,Waukee Fire Department and Waukee Police Department,and all their personnel
from any and all claims for injuries or damages resulting from or arising out of such
participation.
The undersigned hereby further agree(s)to indemnify and hold the City of
Waukee,Iowa,the Waukee Fire Department,the Waukee Police Department and all their
personnel harmless from any claims or demands of any persons arising out of the
undersigned's participation in the "ride-along"program,
THE UNDERSIGNED FURTHER AGREE(S)AND ACKNOWLEDGE(S)
THAT THE UNDERSIGNED ISIARE EXECUTING THIS INDEMNIFYING
RELEASE UPON MY lOUR OWN KNOWLEDGE,BELIEF AND JUDGMENT,AND
NOT UPON ANY REPRESENTATIONS MADE BY THE PARTY OR PARTIES
RELEASED,OR OTHERS ON THEIR BEHALF.
IIWE HAVE READ THE FOREGOING RELEASE,AND UNDERSTAND ITS
TERMS AND FREELY AND VOLUNTARILY SIGN THE SAME.
