RESOLUTION 09-195
APPROVING THE REVISED JOB DESCRIPTION FOR THE WATERIWASTEW ATER
SUPERVISOR POSITION FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS,AND
DIRECTING CITY STAFF TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF FILLING SAID POSITION
IN THE NAME AND BY THE A UTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WA UKEE,IOWA
WHEREAS,the City of Waukee,Dallas County,State oflowa,is a duly organized Municipal
Organization;AND,
WHEREAS,due to the impending retirement of the current Water/Wastewater Supervisor in
December 2009,City staff has reviewed the job description for that position and recommend
making certain revisions;AND,
WHEREAS,the Waukee City Council has reviewed the revised job description for the position
of WaterlW astewater Supervisor and finds it appropriate;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee,Iowa on
this 5th day of October 2009 that it hereby approves the revised job description for the position of
Water/Wastewater Supervisor,attached hereto as Exhibit A;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council directs City staff to begin the process of
filling the position ofWaterlWastewater Supervisor.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Title:Water/Wastewater Superintendent
Department:Public Works
Date:October 2009

Reports To:Public Works Director
PURPOSE OF POSITION
With general direction from the Director of Public Works,operates and maintains the water
distribution,wastewater plant,and the wastewater collection systems -including lift stations.
Oversees the collection,testing and analyzing of water and wastewater samples.Prepares
reports as required in accordance with EPA and DNR regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are typical for this job.These are not to be construed as exclusive or all
inclusive.Other duties may be required and assigned.
1.Collects and analyzes water and wastewater samples and prepares and submits
reports to regulatory agencies,as required.
2.Rereads or special reads as needed.
2.Recommends ordering of supplies,special needs/projects,and advises Public
Works Supervisor of problems/potential problems.
3.Responds to emergency situations in a timely fashion.Subj ect to emergency calls
at anytime/repairs water main breaks,sewer back ups,and lift station alarms.
4.Maintain and operate wastewater treatment plant and collection system including
lift stations.
5.Prepares reports as required and keep the City compliant in accordance with all
EPA and DNR regulations.
6.Maintain and operate water distribution system.
7.Maintains the Back Flow Prevention Program.
8.Submits weekly work reports to Director of Public Works as requested.
9.Performs service calls pertaining to water and sanitary sewer.
10.Assists in the vacuum truck and camera truck operations.
11.Make recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of areas of
responsibility.
12.Work with other departments;perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience
Grade II wastewater collection certificate and Grade II Water Distribution Certificate:
high school diploma or GED and five (5)years experience in a water distribution/wastewater
collection and treatment facility or a combination of education/experience that provides the
necessary knowledge,skills and abilities.A Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program
certificate.
Skills
To perform this job successfully,an individual must be able to perform each essential duty

Language Ability
Ability to read,analyze,and interpret construction plans,professional journals,technical
procedures,or governmental regulations.Ability to write reports,business correspondence,and
procedure manuals.Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from
groups of managers,clients,customers,and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add,subtract,multiply,and divide in all units of measure,using whole numbers,
common fractions,and decimals.Ability to compute rate,ratio,and percent and to draw and
interpret bar graphs.
Cognitive Demands
Working knowledge of applicable codes,ordinances and laws.Ability to apply common sense
understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written,oral,or diagram form.Ability to deal
with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Supervision of Others
4 Fulltime and seasonal part time.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job,the employee is regularly required to stand;walk;sit;

employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move
more than 75 pounds.Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision,distance
vision,color vision,peripheral vision,depth perception,and ability to adjust focus.
Ability to assist in all area of Public Works such as snow removal,building and grounds
maintenance,repair and clean-up on an on-call or as-needed basis.

Class B CDL with air brake endorsement.
