RESOLUTION 12-95
SUSTAINABLE WAUKEE -PAPERLESS COUNCIL MEETINGS
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE,IOWA
WHEREAS,the City of Waukee,Dallas County,State of Iowa,is a duly organized
Municipal Organization;AND,
WHEREAS,in June 2008,the Waukee Mayor and City Council developed an environmental
green initiative conunittee charged with the task of identifying goals and objectives to
facilitate the establishment of green initiatives for the community,to create a Sustainable
Waukee;AND,
WHEREAS,one of the goals was to evaluate the consumption and waste created through the
use of paper packets by the City for City Council meetings;AND,
WHEREAS,after evaluating various factors including,but not limited to,staff and delivery
costs,copying and printing charges,paper consumption and amount of solid waste generated
through use of paper packets,the conunittee recommended the use of electronic packets,with
the recommended method being the implementation and use of their personal electronic
devices,ie iPads,etc,by the Mayor and Councilmembers;AND,
WHEREAS,in order to implement the policy the committee recommends the City reimburse
the Mayor and each Councilmember a reimbursement up to $500 towards the purchase of
personal electronic devices capable receiving email and viewing council packet material and
other documents from July 1 2011 through July 2015,subject to a repayment to the City by
each recipient,as follows:60%if elected official no longer holds office during the first year
of the policy,50%during second year of the policy,and 25%during third year of the policy;
in lieu of such reimbursement a recipient may transfer ownership of the device to the City
upon leaving office;AND,
WHEREAS,the committee further recommends that the Mayor and Councilmembers be
responsible for updating and maintaining their personal electronic device,and agrees to the
elimination of paper;AND,
WHEREAS,the City will purchase two additional devices for staff use and to support the
Mayor and Councihnembers during Council meetings.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Waukee City Council that the
recommendation ofthe committee as set forth above is hereby approved through December
31,2016.
Passed by the City Council of the City of Waukee,Iowa,and approved this the 16th day of
April,20l2.
