RESOLUTION 14-285
SUPPORTING THK RACCOON RIVER VALLEY TRAIL PUBLIC ART
INITIATIVE
IN THE NAME AND BY THE A UTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WA UKEE,IOWA
WHEREAS,the City of Waukee,Iowa is a duly organized municipality within Dallas
County;AND,
WHEREAS,the Raccoon River Valley Trail (RRVT)now comprises more than 89 miles
of paved surface,for bicycling and other forms of recreational activities and includes a 72
mile trail loop which is believed to be the longest paved loop in the United States;AND,
WHEREAS,the RRVT is a highly valued public resource,which enriches our
communities and provides health and recreation benefit to people of all ages,abilities and
socio-economic background;AND,
WHEREAS,the RRVT is showing great potential in creating economic growth and
activity in the 14 connnunities on the trail system,having seen usage more than double
since the completion of the 72 mile loop,with many trail users coming fiom all over
Iowa as well as from out-of-state to use this premier trail;AND,
WHEREAS,Public Art has been proven to be a true difference-maker in attracting
regional and national visitors to public facilities like the RRVT,and it is believed that
making an investment in public art on the RRVT will lead to increased investment,
economic growth and cultural enrichment in the trail communities and region;AND,
WHEREAS,the use of old railroad beds to build the RRVT system has inspired the
public art theme of "In the Shadow of the Rails"to guide the creation of dramatic and
bold public art installations throughout the 14 RRVT trail communities,to establish a
unifying theme winch will help identify the RRVT and draw visitors into each
community along the trail,creating a type of cultural corridor;AND,
WHEREAS,the RRVT Public Art hiitiative will serve as a catalyst for the further
development of locally unique points of interest and cultural amenities within individual
trail communities;AND,
WHEREAS,the adoption of a common public art initiative by all communities along the
trail will help to establish RRVT as a unified regional resource that will assist each trail
conxnunity in securing grants,corporate gifts,and the potential designation of the RRVT
corridor as an "Iowa Great Place,"
NOW THEREFORE BK IT RESOLVED,that the Waukee City Council does hereby
support the regional collaboration among the 14 communities on the RRVT trail for the
purposes of economic and cultural development and does heartily endorse the RRVT "In
the Shadows of'the Rails"Public Art Initiative and application to the Iowa Great Places
program for fLurding support and designation of the RRVT as an "Iowa Great Place,"
