AGENDA ITEM:Consideration of approval of Change Order No. 1 to Absolute Concrete
Construction, Inc. for the NW 10th Street Improvements, W Hickman
Road to NW Douglas Parkway increasing the contract price in the
amount of $137,723.71.
FORMAT:Motion
SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: Change Order No. 1 is for removal of contractor
provided handholes from the contract, cement stabilization, geogrid,
temporary granular surfacing, traffic signal detector cable upgrade,
additional traffic control for detour route signage, time and material for
core-out and replacement with suitable backfill.
FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: The net result of this
Change Order increases the contract price in the amount of $137,723.71.

Dear Ms. Kappos:
Attached please find a detailed Change Order for City Council approval on May 18, 2020.
Change Description
Item 8.18 Handhole, Type 1, Furnish and Install
o Removal of 14 from contract due to private utility companies providing their own
handholes
Item CO1.1 Handhole, Type IV, Install Only
o Due to UPN and CenturyLink wanting their own handhole.
Item CO1.2 Cement Stabilization
o Due to poor soil conditions experienced, in lieu of devoting equipment and crews to
maintaining temporary access roads, using 6% Cement treatment of the subgrade.
Item CO1.3 Geogrid
o Due to poor soil conditions experienced, in lieu of devoting equipment and crews to
maintaining temporary access roads, using geogrid in addition to cement treatment of the
subgrade.
Item CO1.4 Temporary Granular Surfacing, Class A Crushed Stone, Excess of Bid Item
o With additional rock anticipated establishing a new price that does not include
restoration.
Item CO1.5 Traffic Signal Detector Cable Upgrade to Cat6e
o Due to potential equip ment changes for advanced detection, cable from cabinet to
advanced detection is being upgraded from cat5e cable to give flexibility of future
options.
Item CO1.6 Additional Traffic Control for Detour Route Signage
o Once planned detour route was in place, it was noticed additional signage should be
added to NE Alice’s Road south of Hickman Rd.
Item CO1.7 Time and Material for Core-out and replacement with suitable backfill
o A section of gas main trench east of NW 10th Street along the south side of NW Sunrise
Drive was not sufficiently compacted by another contractor during the 2019 construction
season and created a section of unstable material needing to be addressed.

We have reviewed the submitted quotes from Absolute Concrete Construction, Inc. and they appear to be
in order with current industry pricing. If City Staff concurs with this pricing, we recommend the City of
Waukee Increase the contract price in the amount of $137,723.71 to complete the additional work
associated with Change Order #01.
