HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-01-16-J01D Communications Policy AGENDA ITEM: CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA CITY COUNCIL MEETING COMMUNICATION MEETING DATE: January 16, 2017 AGENDA ITEM: Consideration of approval of a resolution approving City of Waukee Communications Policy FORMAT: Consent Agenda SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: During goal-setting in the spring of 2016, the City Council set a priority for establishing a citywide staff communications policy. The policy statement has been written and aims to keep the public and media fully, fairly and accurately informed of programs, services, events and issues in a timely and forthright manner. FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: COMMISSION/BOARD/COMMITTEE COMMENT: STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: City staff recommends City Council approval of the policy. RECOMMENDATION: Approve the policy. ATTACHMENTS: I. Proposed Resolution II. City Communications Policy PREPARED BY: Summer Evans REVIEWED BY: THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA RESOLUTION 17- APPROVING THE CITY OF WAUKEE COMMUNICATIONS POLICY IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal Organization; AND, WHEREAS, on July 5, 2016, the Waukee City Council approved City of Waukee FY2016- 2017 Strategic Plan (Resolution #16-288); AND, WHEREAS, one of the management goals in progress was to establish a citywide staff communications policy; AND, WHEREAS, City staff has presented the City Council with a proposed City of Waukee Communications Policy, which aims to keep the public and media fully, fairly and accurately informed of programs, services, events and issues in a timely and forthright manner. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Waukee City Council that it hereby approves the City of Waukee Communications Policy, attached hereto as Exhibit A. Passed by the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa, and approved the 16th day of January, 2017. ____________________________ William F. Lyon VACANT SEAT         CITY OF WAUKEE COMMUNICATIONS POLICY STATEMENT The purpose of the Communications Policy is to keep the public and media fully, fairly and accurately informed of programs, services, events and issues in a timely and forthright manner. Efficient and effective communication with the public and media is critical to the City of Waukee’s ability to present information in a manner consistent with Waukee City Council policies and philosophy of open government. Coordination, uniformity, accuracy and timeliness are cornerstones of strong and productive public relations. It is the policy of the City of Waukee to provide accountability to the public and transparency of government; to ensure that timely and accurate information is conveyed to the public regarding incidents or issues of a sensitive or controversial nature; to establish and maintain an accurate public perception of the City; to increase the visibility of the City of Waukee on local, statewide and national levels; to inform residents of City programs and services; and to promote the City’s achievements, activities and significant events. _____________________________________ _____________________________________ William F.
