CITY COUNCIL MEETING COMMUNICATION
MEETING DATE: June 5, 2017
AGENDA ITEM: Public Hearing on the annexation of consenting properties by the City of
Waukee, Iowa, with consideration of the annexation taking place
immediately thereafter (Waukee West Annexation).
FORMAT: Public Hearing
SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: The owners of Property West of the
City have requested that their Property be annexed to the City of Waukee. It is the City’s
understanding that several property Owners have been approached by developers over
the years and many realize the benefits that being part of the City provide them including
city planning and services that attract development.
The proposed annexation is the natural outgrowth of years of City planning, investment
and its expansion of the City’s infrastructure and service capabilities. The area of land to
the west of Waukee has been part of the City’s plan for future private development and
City amenity expansion. With the City growing at approximately three people per day,
City officials continually plan for continued expansion opportunities to afford additional
opportunities for private development which contribute to enhanced service and
employment opportunities for our citiz ens.
The Waukee City Council has envisioned annexation to the west of the City limits for some
time now, knowing that expansion will potentially contribute to the future private
development of additional housing, commercial, and other economic opportunities for our
current and future residents. It will also provide future opportunities for the development
City amenities and service enhancements.
As the City embarks on the planning process for a new Comprehensive Plan - Imagine
Waukee 2040 - land use continues to be a large focus. City leaders want to be prepared to
serve private growth in the most efficient , smart and proactive ways.
The proposed annexation is 100% voluntary.

RECOMMENDATION: Hold the public hearing
