Police Chief Quinn reviewed the history of temporary parking requests along SE Olson Dr. and discussed City staff’s recommendation to allow the parking for dates requested. Police patrols in the area will be increased on those dates, and the temporary parking will be revoked if the snow ordinance is in effect. After this spring, City staff will review how well the temporary parking worked and make a recommendation on how to address such parking in the future. That recommendation may be to allow parking along SE Olson Dr. on weekends and evenings. Council Member Harrison praised the business success of Sports Plex West and asked if the business owners had any long-term plans for additional parking; Mike Mahoney, 3995 Indian Ridge Dr. and one of the owners of Sports Plex West, addressed the City Council and replied that the owners were exploring parking alternatives. He noted that January-March is the busiest time of year for Sports Plex West and that they were working with neighboring businesses to allow parking in those lots during future special events. Council Member Harrison stated that he would vote in favor of the resolution, but strongly encouraged Sports Plex West owners to partner with neighboring businesses. He expressed concern that there may be a point where the City Council could no longer allow street parking in the area. Council Member Peterson noted possible safety concerns with street parking, specifically children darting into the street from a parked car. He also stated that he would vote in favor of the resolution, but that there needs to be a different way to address the issue in the future. 9 Council Member Blanchard asked if parking was allowed on the south side of SE Olson Dr. in the past; Mr. Mahoney replied that he remembered it was allowed at one time. Mayor Peard praised Sports Plex West on their successful business, but noted concerns with traffic issues along SE Olson Dr. now that it extends further to the east. Chief Quinn stated that City staff would continue to monitor the parking situation in the area. Results of vote: Ayes: Blanchard, Harrison, Peterson. Nays: None. Absent: Hughes, Lyon.
