SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: Upon review of the position of Waukee Public Library
Director, the job description has been written to more accurately reflect the
functions and requirements of the position. The Waukee Public Library Board
of Trustees approved a revised job description for the position of Library
Director on January 19, 2016.

STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: The Waukee Public Library Board of Trustees and the City
of Waukee Human Resource Director recommend the approval of the job
description revision.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the resolution.

APPROVING REVISED JOB DESCRIPTION [LIBRARY DIRECTOR]
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA
WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal
Organization; AND,
WHEREAS, the Waukee Public Library Board of Trustees has reviewed and revised the job
description for the position of Library Director to more accurately reflect the job duties of that
position; AND,
WHEREAS, the Waukee Public Library Board of Trustees and Human Resource Director
recommend approval of the revised job description.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa on
this 26th day of January, 2016, that it hereby approves the revised job description for the Library
Director position.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Library Director Reports to: Library Board of Trustees
Dept/Div: Library Direct Reports: Adult Services Librarian
Union Status: Non-Represented Youth Services Librarian, Communications
Pay Grade: 3 & Digital Initiatives Librarian
FLSA Status: Exempt - Executive
JOB PURPOSE: The Library Director is responsible for all aspects of the library, including services,
collection, staff and property. The Director manages, evaluates and improves the library in
accordance with library policy and in close cooperation and communication with the Library
Board of Trustees and the City of Waukee.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Leads and directs the Waukee Public Library staff through selection, orientation, training, performance
management and discipline according to standard operating procedures, City policy and department rules
and regulations.
2. Develops and directs the Waukee Public Library policies, procedures, regulations, programs, systems,
operations goals and objectives.
3. Oversees the financial aspects of the Waukee Public Library operations: accounting for department
revenues, approving expenditures, keeping accurate inventory and preparing the annual CIP and budget
request.
4. Assists with recruiting new Trustees and responsible for new Trustee orientation as well as providing
continuing education opportunities for the Board.
5. Prepares and posts Board agendas in compliance with Iowa’s Open Meetings Laws.
6. Maintains positive public relations and library advocacy by participating in City Staff meetings, community
organizations and activities as well as professional library organizations.
7. Responsible for maintaining the library’s State Accreditation.
8. Monitors physical facility of building (interior and exterior), grounds and equipment for safety, attractiveness
and efficient operation.
9. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

5. Seek to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of all Library operations with positive and creative
approaches to challenges.
6. Contribute to overall City effectiveness by providing critical staff support to task forces and by participating,
as necessary, in assisting all other teams.
7. Utilize high level of conflict resolution skills with staff, community members, elected officials and
stakeholders.
8. Attentive to the City’s and the Library’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all
City policies and procedures ensuring that all work performed and all staff members meet those standards
while exhibiting consistent treatment of all staff.

9. Actively supports all efforts to increase cooperation, communication, and collaboration between and among
staff, library patrons and volunteers.
10. Acknowledges and accepts the Library’s mission, respects the Library’s confidentiality regulations and
maintains the integrity of the Waukee Public Library.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited university required.
2. A minimum of five (5) years of library experience desired.
3. Must have (or be able to obtain within the first year) and maintain Iowa State Library Certification Level VI.
4. Demonstrated success in interpersonal and communication skills.
5. Successful experience in coaching staff and volunteers.
6. Be comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories.
7. Must demonstrate the ability to conduct a reference interview and be able to answer reference questions
with authority and tenacity to meet patron needs.
8. A working knowledge of office equipment and administrative tasks is required.
9. Access to transportation with insurance at required state levels to conduct business throughout the
assigned area.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds.
2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed
paperwork.
3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic
and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community.
4. Must reside within 15 miles of the library.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required.
2. Standard work hours must be flexible and include occasional evenings and weekends.
3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within Waukee Public Library building.
