HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-01-26-D01D Library Communications Job Description, Pay Grade AGENDA ITEM: CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA CITY COUNCIL MEETING COMMUNICATION MEETING DATE: January 26, 2016 AGENDA ITEM: Consideration of approval of a resolution approving job description and pay grade [Communications and Digital Initiatives Librarian, Waukee Public Library] FORMAT: Consent Agenda SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: The Waukee Public Library Board of Trustees approved the creation of the new full-time position, Communications and Digital Initiatives Librarian at the Waukee Public Library on January 19, 2016. The Board of Trustees also approved the job description and the Pay Grade of 11 on the City of Waukee 2015-16 Non-Represented Compensation Plan. FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: COMMISSION/BOARD/COMMITTEE COMMENT: STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: The Waukee Public Library Board of Trustees and the City of Waukee Human Resource Director recommend the approval of establishing the position and the approval of the job description and pay grade. Lyon Rick Peterson   Communications & Digital Initiatives Librarian Page 1 Council Approved : _________ Board Approved Revision : _________ City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Communications & Digital Reports to: Library Director Initiatives Librarian (FT) Direct Reports: None Dept/Div: Library FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Union Status: Non-Union Pay Grade: 11 JOB PURPOSE: The Communications & Digital Initiatives Librarian will manage and direct the ongoing development and evaluation of the library’s communications, including the web site, mobile site, social networking profiles, print publications, and digital signage. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Works with the Library Director and implements a strategic vision and implementation plan for the library’s digital collection, online presence and communications strategy. 2. Recommends new technologies, best practices, and services related to digital content. 3. Reviews and recommends digital resources such as online interactive books, online second language development, and e-book resources. 4. Creates and maintains Waukee Public Library’s digital collection, online exhibits, and museum promotions. 5. Creates, manages, and maintains content for the library website, social media, and other web-based platforms. 6. Promotes library programs, services, resources, and events both online and in print formats (posters, book marks, newsletters, fliers, print mailings, library signage, brochures and media, etc). 7. Appropriately responds to or shares patron feedback and comments in a timely manner. 8. Provides quality customer service, readers’ advisory, new patron orientation and ongoing patron educations, and answers reference questions. 9. Manages statistics for all digital resources, prepares reports and analyzes statistics. 10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Acknowledges and accepts the Library’s mission, respects the Library’s confidentiality regulations and maintains the integrity of the Waukee Public Library. 3. Maintains knowledge of current holdings and library resources, both print and electronic. 4. Continually seeks and participates in opportunities for continuing education and professional growth. 5. Seeks to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of all library operations with positive and creative approaches to challenges. 6. Demonstrates sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner. 7. Understand and internalize the importance of seeking resolution to problems and concerns by bringing them to the direct attention of supervisor in a timely manner. 8. Be attentive to the City’s and the Library’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City and Library policies and procedures. 9. Represents the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. MLS required. 2. One (1) year library or related customer service experience. 3. Must know how to use Public Access Catalog, electronic resources and other information technology sources to meet typical library needs, or be able to become proficient at these resources within the first 60 days on the job. 5. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in software required to complete the functions of the position. 6. Be comfortable working in close proximity to all age categories. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. 2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled library with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Standard work hours must be flexible and include evenings and weekends. 3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Library building. 4.
