HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-05-16-J11 Special Census Certification AGENDA ITEM: CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA CITY COUNCIL MEETING COMMUNICATION MEETING DATE: May 16, 2016 AGENDA ITEM: Consideration of approval of a resolution certifying the 2015 Special Federal Census for the City of Waukee to the Iowa Secretary of State and the Treasurer of the State of Iowa FORMAT: Resolution SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: The Census Bureau completed a partial Special Census for the City of Waukee in December of 2015. The partial special Census consisted of Census blocks that had any kind of development activity between 2010 and 2015. Based upon the final certification, there was an increase in population within the City of Waukee of 4,155 new residents. The new Official population for the City of Waukee is 17,945. In addition to the population increase, it was determined there were a total of 1,714 new housing units constructed during this time. These numbers represent an approximately 30% increase in both population and housing units within the City of Waukee over a five year period. FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: With the completion of the Special Census, the City will receive approximately $457,000 in additional road use tax dollars for 2017 through 2020 representing an increase in revenue of approximately $1,8 million. COMMISSION/BOARD/COMMITTEE COMMENT: STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: Staff would recommend approval of certifying the Special Census. RECOMMENDATION: Approve the Resolution ATTACHMENTS: I. Census Bureau Information PREPARED BY: Brad Deets, Development Services Director THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA RESOLUTION 16- RESOLUTION CERTIFYING THE 2015 SPECIAL FEDERAL CENSUS FOR THE CITY OF WAUKEE TO THE IOWA SECRETARY OF STATE AND THE TREASURER OF THE STATE OF IOWA IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA WHEREAS, a Special Federal Census has been taken for the City of Waukee, Iowa, AND, WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa and the Mayor of the City of Waukee, Iowa, desire to certify the 2015 Special Federal Census for the City of Waukee, Iowa to the Iowa Secretary of State and the Treasurer of the State of Iowa pursuant to Iowa Code Section 9F.6; AND, WHEREAS, the certified population for the City of Waukee in 2010 was 13,790. As a result of the 2015 Special Census, the certified population of the City of Waukee will be 17,945. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Waukee City Council in session this 16th day of May 2016 that the 2015 Special Federal Census, as set forth in the attached Exhibit A, is hereby certified to the Iowa Secretary of State and the Treasurer of the state of Iowa, and the Mayor of the City of Waukee hereby joins in such certification.
