Walnut Creek North Trunk Sewer Extension Phase 1 Completion

SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: The project is for construction of Little Walnut
Creek North Trunk Sewer Extension – Phase 1 Completion including all labor, materials and
equipment necessary for approximately 3,100 linear feet of 24-inch diameter sanitary sewer in
open cut and installed within existing casing, manholes, excavation and backfill, surface
restoration and miscellaneous associated work, including cleanup.
The City received bids on August 4, 2021 with four (4) contractors submitting bids. J&K
Contracting, LLC of Urbandale, IA, submitted the low bid in the amount of $1,045,000 which is
approximately 3% over the engineer’s estimate of $1,014,020.00.
This project is included in the approved FY 2022 Capital Improvements Plan approved by City
Council in March 2021 with a total project budget of $1,930,000.00. This project has a
substantial completion date of November 19, 2021.
FISCAL IMPACT INCLUDING COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS: $1,045,000.00
COMMISSION/BOARD/COMMITTEE COMMENT:
STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: Staff recommends awarding the project to J&K
Contracting, LLC. in the amount of $1,045,000.00.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the resolution.

RESOLUTION MAKING AWARD OF CONSTRUCTION
CONTRACT FOR THE LITTLE WALNUT CREEK NORTH
TRUNK SEWER EXTENSION - PHASE 1 COMPLETION
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, STATE
OF IOWA:
Section 1. That the events of default set forth in the July 12, 2021 Resolution and July 13,
2021 Notice of Default under the contract for the Little Walnut Creek North Trunk Sewer
Extension – Phase 1 project have not been cured, and it is therefore necessary and proper to
consider bids and award a contract for the completion of the project as set forth and described in
the plans and specifications heretofore adopted by this Council on August 9, 2021.
Section 1. That the following bid for the construction of certain public improvements
described in general as the Little Walnut Creek North Trunk Sewer Extension - Phase 1
Completion, described in the plans and specifications heretofore adopted by this Council on
August 9, 2021, be and is hereby accepted, the same being the lowest responsive, responsible bid
received for such work, as follows:
Contractor: J&K Contracting, LLC, of Urbandale, IA
Amount of bid: $1,045,000.00
Portion of project: All construction work
Section 2.That the Mayor and Clerk are hereby directed to execute the contract with the
contractor for the construction of the public improvements, such contract not to be binding on the
City until approved by this Council.

LITTLE WALNUT CREEK NORTH TRUNK SEWER – PHASE 1 COMPLETION
RECOMMENDATION TO AWARD CONTRACT
The City of Waukee received bids until 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 4, 2021 for the Little Walnut
Creek North Trunk Sewer – Phase 1 Completion project. A total of four bids were received as
follows:

The Engineer's Estimate of cost for the construction of the project was $1,014,020. We recommend
the City of Waukee award the contract to J&K Contracting, LLC in the amount of $1,045,000 for the
Little Walnut Creek North Trunk Sewer – Phase 1 Completion project.
