SYNOPSIS INCLUDING PRO & CON: Job description for a Triumph Park Superintendent within
the Parks & Recreation department has been created at the non-union pay
grade of N13.

STAFF REVIEW AND COMMENT: The City Administrator, Parks & Recreation Director and
Human Resources Director recommend the approval of the job description
and pay grade.

APPROVING JOB DESCRIPTION AND PAY GRADE
[TRIUMPH PARK SUPERINTENDENT ]
IN THE NAME AND BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF WAUKEE, IOWA
WHEREAS, the City of Waukee, Dallas County, State of Iowa, is a duly organized Municipal
Organization; AND,
WHEREAS, the Parks & Recreation Director proposes the creation of a non-represented,
Triumph Park Superintendent position; AND,
WHEREAS, this position addition will be responsible for the grounds, structures and irrigation
systems at Triumph Park as well as maintenance of all city-owned ball fields; AND,
WHEREAS, the pay grade for the position shall be N13; AND,
WHEREAS, the Parks & Recreation Director and Human Resource Director recommend
establishing the position and approving the job description and pay grade.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Waukee, Iowa on
this 18th day of October 2021, that it hereby approves the job description and pay grade for
Triumph Park Superintendent, Parks & Recreation Department.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Triumph Park Superintendent Reports to: Parks & Rec Facilities Manager
Dept/Div: Parks & Recreation Direct Reports: Triumph Park Laborer
Union Status: Non-Represented FLSA Status: Exempt - Administrator
Grade: N13
JOB PURPOSE: Under general direction of the Parks & Recreation Facilities Manager, performs
maintenance work, and provides oversight, coordination, and direction of staff involved in
the high standards of upkeep of all grounds at Triumph Park and City owned ball fields.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.)
1. Leads and directs the Triumph Park grounds staff through selection, orientation, training, performance
management and discipline according to standard operating procedures, City policy and department rules
and regulations.
2. Mows, trims, irrigates, seeds, fertilizes, and aerifies turf areas. Maintains all City owned ball fields.
3. Maintains and repairs grounds, structures, and irrigation systems within Triumph Park, including restroom,
concession and dugout areas, trash and litter removal, general clean-up, and snow removal.
4. Assists with all general landscaping duties including tree, shrub, and plant maintenance.
5. Assists with the creation of annual budget for Triumph Park grounds maintenance and capital improvement
of park properties, taking into account future approved plans for the park.
6. Plans all maintenance and project work for Triumph Park, applying agronomic and administrative expertise
to achieve park maintenance standards and future goals.
7. Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish park maintenance goals.
8. Inspects park frequently to ensure maintenance standards are being achieved.
9. Acquires necessary park equipment and supplies to maintain grounds.
10. Keeps accurate and complete records regarding payroll, weather data, maintenance programs, equipment
inventory and pesticide applications.
11. Maintains direct communication with Parks & Recreation Facilities Manager and staff to ensure the
effective operation of park activities.
12. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Associate degree (AA) or technical certification in turf management, or closely related field preferred.
2. Two years’ work experience in a related position.
3. Experience leading and developing staff and/or volunteers.
4. Must obtain 3T Turf Pest Control certification within 2 months of hire.
5. Familiarity with the rules of park etiquette.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to maneuver along walkways, trails, and undeveloped areas up to two miles in length.
2. Able to climb in and out of park equipment and other modes of transportation.
3. Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds occasionally.
4. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using
electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses, and community
members.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Work is performed inside and outside. Exposure to cold, heat and elements of weather and nature may be
encountered.
2. Standard work hours must be flexible and include evenings and weekends and will be greater than 40
hours per week for a large percentage of the year.
3. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30-minute radius of the City limits due to the
need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the
citizens of Waukee.
