HomeMy WebLinkAboutCD - Planning InternRevised 10-2021 Planning Intern Page 1 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Planning Intern Reports to: Planning Coordinator Dept/Div: Community Development Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: Seasonal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Planning Intern, under general supervision, assists in a number of tasks including review of development applications and writing of staff reports, research and drafting of ordinances, special research projects and general code compliance enforcement. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Assists in the development review process including review of zoning requests, subdivisions, plats and site plans. 2. Assists with the preparation of staff comments and correspondence with various property owners, engineers and architects. 3. Assists in the administration of applications for variance, special use permits, special exceptions and related matters for action by the Board of Adjustment and Board of Appeals including the preparation of agendas, written reports with recommendations for action, meeting publication, notification to adjacent property owners and record and file action taken. 4. Investigates violations related to property maintenance and building codes and observes conditions during inspections issuing notices for corrections to persons responsible for conformance. 5. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Attentive to the City’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City policies and procedures ensuring that all work meets these standards. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Undergraduate student having completed at least two years of study, majoring in Community and Regional Planning or closely related field. 2. Previous work, internship or classwork experience in planning, land development and/or construction trades. 3. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, e.g. PowerPoint and Word. 4. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and office equipment. Revised 10-2021 Planning Intern Page 2 2. Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 3. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Position requires some outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered 3. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards. 4. Standard work hours will be flexible based on the needs of the department and the employee’s availability, but will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with occasional hours including weekends and evenings as required.
