HomeMy WebLinkAboutGraphic Design & Marketing Intern Graphic Design & Marketing Intern Page 1 Council Approved: 2/4/2020 Revised 10-2021 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Graphic Design & Marketing Intern Reports to: Marketing & Communications Director Dept/Div: Marketing & Communications Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: Seasonal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Graphic Design & Marketing Intern will assist in the creation of promotional materials, presentations, online and other communications created and distributed by the City of Waukee. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Learns and explores all aspects of the Marketing & Communications Department including: internal and external communications with residents and the media, and promoting the City’s brand. 2. Creates visual concepts and develops the overall layout and production design for a wide variety of City of Waukee materials within a deadline. Including content for a range of media and formats: print collateral and publications, signage, website, emails, social media graphics and other projects as assigned. 3. Uses brand assets and guidelines to develop and maintain a consistent visual style across all designs. 4. Works collaboratively with other members of the Marketing & Communications team and other City departments to produce engaging, quality designs and content. 5. Updates the City of Waukee website regularly. 6. Assists with social media. 7. Creates photo and video content. 8. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. Attentive to the City’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City policies and procedures ensuring that all work meets these standards. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Undergraduate student having completed at least two years of study, majoring in graphic design, art, marketing or related field. 2. Previous work, internship or classwork experience in graphic design. 3. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially graphics programs (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop). 4. Strong in execution of design concepts and production, including typography, image selection and layouts. 5. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, e.g. PowerPoint and Word. Well-organized, detail-oriented and capable of meeting tight deadlines, while also demonstrating strengths in creativity. 7. May be asked to provide a link to digital samples or show portfolio as part of the application process. 8. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and office equipment. 2. Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 3. Able and willing to carry camera gear while walking varying distances in various types of weather. 4. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards. 3. Standard work hours will be flexible based on the needs of the department and the employee’s availability, but will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with occasional hours including weekends and evenings as required. Minimum amount of hours will be 20 per week. 4. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee City Hall building. 5.
