JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Natural Resources Intern (Seasonal) Reports to: Parks & Rec. Director
Dept/Div: Parks & Recreation/Parks Direct Reports: None
Pay Grade: Seasonal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE: The Natural Resources Intern assists in performing a variety of duties with responsibility for
inventory of City trees, providing and assisting design input and landscape activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Develops and maintains an inventory of trees on City property to include species, condition, location,
maintenance, etc.
2. Performs data collection using Global Positioning System.
3. Coordinates and participates in tree inspections, planting, pruning and removal.
4. Provides design input for plantings and programs.
5. Participates in landscaping activities as required.
6. Assists in maintenance and repair of park facilities including mowing, cutting of brush and trimming of
trees, landscape maintenance, watering, weed eating, and trash pick-up.
7. Keeps equipment, shop and storage areas clean and well-maintained.
8. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in horticulture, forestry, landscaping or
closely related field.
2. Ability to identify tree species rated to Midwest hardiness zones 4-5.
3. Knowledge of insect and disease problems associated with trees and shrubs in the Midwest.
4. GPS/GIS experience preferred.
5. Must be 18 years of age or older.
6. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License and meets the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
2. Able to spend the majority of work related time outdoors.
3. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of
weather.
7. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic
devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, vendors and the community.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may
be encountered.
2. During summer months outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for entire scheduled work day.
3. During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud.
4. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper
procedures are not followed.
5. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards.
6. Standard work hours will be Monday – Friday 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM with additional evening or weekend
hours as required.
7. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within Waukee Public Works Building.
8. There is no residency requirement for this position.
