HomeMy WebLinkAboutPD - SergeantPolice Sergeant Page 1 Council Approved 10-05-15 Revised 01-27-16, 10-2021, 7-2023, 10-2023, 2-2024 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Police Sergeant Reports to: Division Commander Dept/Div: Police Direct Reports: Subordinate Police Officers Pay Grade: N33 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: A Waukee Police Sergeant supervises a subordinate of police officers engaged in law enforcement and crime prevention for the safety and protection of life and property in the City of Waukee during general patrol and/or specialized work in the field or station. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Leads and directs the work of police officers engaged in the enforcement of the law, the prevention of crime and/or disorder, the investigation of crimes, criminal activity and missing persons through selection, orientation, training, performance management and discipline according to standard operating procedures, City policy and Departmental rules and regulations. 2. Reviews the work of officers by personal observation and through written reports. 3. Assumes responsibility for Department in absence of superior officers. 4. Responds to citizens’ complaints and concerns regarding officers. 5. Takes charge of important criminal cases and decides whether or not to forward the same to Investigations. 6. Coordinates with command staff in the management of media relations and special operations. 7. Performs all essential functions of a Waukee Police Officer when needed. 8. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Extensive knowledge of modern policing methods and procedures, rules of evidence, laws governing the custody of persons. 6. Able to analyze law enforcement problems and plan and supervise solutions. 7. Able to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports. 8. Must be of exceptional character and display the highest of integrity. 9. Attend administrative, department, and team meetings as scheduled. 10. Continually seek and accept opportunities for personal and professional growth. 11. Contribute to overall City effectiveness by providing critical staff support to task forces and by participating, as necessary, in assisting all other teams. 12. Safeguard confidential information and use it or disclose it only as expressly authorized or specifically required in the course of performing specific job duties. 13. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other stakeholders and law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses. 14. Attentive to the City’s and Department’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City and Departmental policies and procedure ensuring that all work performed meet those standards while exhibiting consistent treatment of all staff. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school diploma or GED required. Bachelors degree preferred. 2. Four years of full-time law enforcement experience required. 3. Must hold Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification or have the ability to meet the licensing standards established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy within a year from date of hire. 4. Must possess and have the ability to maintain a valid Driver’s License. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must meet all minimum standards for Iowa Law Enforcement Officers per ILEA. 2. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment. 3. Able to lift, pull, push up to 100 pounds unassisted when necessary. 4. Be responsive to verbal and visible signs of distress and alarms. 5. Able to remember names, faces and details of incidents. 6. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, vendors and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 2. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards. 3. Will be exposed to emergencies, stressful situations, and significant workplace pressure. 4. Standard work hours must be flexible, will include days, evenings, overnights and weekends, may be greater than 40 hours per week, and may be called to report to duty at any time. 5. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Safety building. 6.
