HomeMy WebLinkAboutPW - Stormwater Intern Stormwater Intern Page 1 Council Approved 02-16-16 Revised 02-07-17 Revised 10-2021 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Stormwater Intern Reports to: Assistant PW Director - Engineering Dept/Div: Public Works/Engineering Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: Seasonal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Stormwater Intern assists in maintenance of the City’s stormwater infrastructure. Over the course of the summer, interns will have the opportunity to work on a significant project, to network with professionals in local government, and to observe firsthand the efforts of the City to resolve complex issues. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Assists in gathering information to update the storm sewer inventory. 2. Assists in inspections of existing facilities for illicit discharge detection and elimination. 3. Assists in data collection for the watershed assessment program. 4. Uses GPS equipment to record the location of the area being surveyed for current conditions and geometry. 5. Assists in maintaining the data collection of features in the City’s GIS database. 6. Gathers information using a camera and imputing into a mobile tablet. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Completed at least one year toward Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related field. 2. Must possess a Valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to do survey work, ability to make moderately complex field and office engineering computations. 2. Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications. 3. Able to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 4. Be able to spend a majority of work related time outdoors. 5. Able to remove manhole cover weighing over 100 pounds with the use of assistive devices multiple times during the day. 6. Able to bend, squat and view into catch basin identifying inappropriate substances. Stormwater Intern Page 2 Council Approved 02-16-16 Revised 02-07-17 Revised 10-2021 7. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment. 2. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 3. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards. 4. During summer months outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for entire scheduled work day. 5. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed. 6. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Works Building 7. Standard work hours will be Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM. 8. There is no residency requirement for this position. I have read and understand the information contained in the Job Description.
