Publics Works Director - Engineering Dept/Div: Public Works/Engineering Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: Seasonal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Engineering intern assists in performing a variety of duties with responsibility for routine or minor projects or for one or more phases of a more complex project. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Learns and explores all aspects of the Engineering Division. 2. Assists with the inspection of a variety of public works, subdivision, site plan and building construction projects to determine compliance with plans and specifications. 3. Assists in preparing records, reports, and logs; maintains filing system on records of work performed. 4. Assists in the maintenance of numerous paper and computer files, maps and databases related to the City’s engineering operations. 5. Performs data collection using Global Positioning System equipment. 6. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Completed at least one year toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, GIS, Environmental Sciences, Community & Regional Planning or related field. 2. Must possess a Valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Position requires lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally. 2. Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and office equipment. 3. Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on a project. 4. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather. 5. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, vendors and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment. 2. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. Standard work hours will be Monday – Friday 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM with occasional hours including weekends and evenings as required. 5. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Works Building. 6.
