HomeMy WebLinkAboutGIS - GIS InternGIS Intern Page 1 Council Approved 02-16-16 Revised 02-07-17 Revised 10-2021 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: GIS Intern Reports to: GIS Coordinator Dept/Div: Public Works/GIS Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: Seasonal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Geographic Information System (GIS) Intern assists in the maintenance of the City’s GIS. Internship can be tailored to meet the requirements of the university. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Learns and explores all aspects of the GIS Division including: updating spatial databases, reading and interpreting site and subdivision plans or documents and updating attribute information in tabular databases. 2. Digitizes features to update the City’s GIS. 3. Researches, develops and maintains various software applications, programs, automated GIS tools and products. 4. Performs data collection using Global Position System equipment. 5. Assists City departments with GIS related activities and daily GIS or general technology needs. 6. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Completed at least one year toward Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Engineering, Community & Regional Planning, Computer Science, Geography or related field or equivalent experience. 2. Completion of at least one course in GIS required. 3. Must possess a Valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Position requires lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally. 2. Able to function productively in a standard office environment accessing cabinets, shelving, work areas and office equipment. 3. Able to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on project such as computer screen. 4. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather. 5. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, vendors and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate controlled office with hazards typical to that environment. 2. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 3. Standard work hours will be Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM with occasional hours including Saturdays and evenings as required. 5. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Works Building. 6.
