HomeMy WebLinkAboutPW - Gas Services Technician Gas Services Technician Page 1 Council Approval 2011 Revised 04-03-18, 8-2020. 10-2021, 7-2023 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Gas Services Technician Reports to: Gas Superintendent Dept/Div: Public Works/Gas Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: N26 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Gas Service Technician maintains and repairs the municipal natural gas system, responds to customer service calls, changes meters and promotes natural gas safety. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Performs work in a safe manner complying with all applicable safety rules, regulations and procedures while protecting self, and all others from injury. 2. Responds to gas leak calls, carbon monoxide calls and uses associated equipment to investigate the call. 3. Lights pilots, reads meters, and investigates abnormal gas consumption. 4. Performs gas bracket inspections. 5. Installs new gas and replacement meters, turns on gas meters and performs no-flow check, turns off and seals gas meters for non-payments and adjusts for proper delivery pressure, keeps accurate records of new installations. 6. Locates underground facilities in conjunction with work and performs standby duties when required. 7. Maintains natural gas system as required by O & M specifications. 8. Plows snow during regular business hours and after hours during snow emergencies. 9. Responds to emergency and on-call situations for any Public Works Division in a timely manner. 10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in software required to complete the functions of the position. 12. Ability to read various maps, plats, and construction plans. 13. Able to perform basic arithmetic and keep accurate and complete records. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High School diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 2. Minimum 2 years’ experience in gas industry in a variety of disciplines preferred. 3. Good working knowledge of the physical properties and characteristics of natural gas and natural gas operations preferred. 5. Must possess a valid Class B Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsements or ability to obtain within nine (9) months of hire and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to regularly lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 75 pounds. 2. Able to move objects weighing over 100 pounds using assistive devices multiple times during the day. 3. Able to enter manholes. 4. Able to climb different types of ladders and stairs. 5. Able to enter and work in confined space with proper training and personal protective equipment (PPEs). 6. Must have an acute sense of smell to readily detect an unsafe environment. 7. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas on uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather. 8. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 2. Subject to on-call duties and emergency call-ins. 3. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed. 4. During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud. 5. Position requires travel within and outside of the City, which imposes common travel hazards. 6. Standard work hours will be Monday-Friday 7:00AM – 3:30PM with occasional hours including evenings, overnights, and weekends as required. 7. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Services Building. 8. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30-minute radius of the City limits due to the need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Waukee.
