JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Police Officer – Crisis Intervention Reports to: Sergeant
Dept/Div: Police Direct Reports: None
Pay Grade: P14 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE: The Police Officer – Crisis Intervention works closely with a designated mental health
professional, addressing public safety, as co-responders on mental health related calls. Serves as a
knowledgeable resource, fostering community relationships and providing intervention, navigation and
ongoing follow-up to effectively support those in need.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintain a professional working relationship with the mental health professional assigned.
2. Be a direct liaison between the mental health community and the Waukee Police Department.
3. Respond to mental health related calls as requested.
4. Complete mental health follow-ups with identified consumers or referrals from patrol.
5. Complete assessments of individuals in a mental health crisis to determine if involuntary hospitalization is
required.
6. Provide transportation to locally identified resources best suited for the consumer requesting/requiring
hospitalization.
7. Develop a resource guide linking all the community stakeholders.
8. Coordinate with local mental health agencies for continuity of care.
9. Attend meetings with local facilities, hospitals, courtroom workgroups, as required.
10. Maintain statistics pertinent to the role and the program.
11. Attend roll calls, monthly or as needed, to educate patrol officers and supervisors about the program.
12. Work closely with the consultant group to improve the implementation of the co-responder program.
13. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

mental health consumer population.
9. Basic understanding of mental illness, developmental disorders, and substance use disorders.
10. Advanced working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of crisis intervention & de-
escalation.
11. Understanding and ability to interpret/apply state and local mental health laws and regulations.
12. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team.

13. Attentive to the City's and Department's standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City
and Department policies and procedures ensuring that all work performed meets those standards.
14. Complies with and has excellent knowledge of all departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
15. Excellent knowledge of current municipal, state, and federal codes, laws and ordinances, interpreting
and enforcing the same.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or GED required. Associates or bachelors degree preferred.
2. Must have completed 40 hours of crisis intervention training course.
3. Must hold Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification or have the ability to meet the licensing standards
established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy within a year from date of hire.
4. Must be a US citizen.
5. Must be 21 years of age or older by date of hire.
6. Bi-lingual and bi-cultural understanding preferred.
7. Must possess and have the ability to maintain a valid Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must meet all minimum standards for Iowa Law Enforcement Officers per ILEA.
2. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment.
3. Able to lift, pull, push up to 100 pounds unassisted when necessary.
4. Be responsive to verbal and visible signs of distress and alarms.
5. Able to remember names, faces and details of incidents.
6. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using
electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, vendors and the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature
may be encountered.
2. Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards.
3. Will be exposed to emergencies, stressful situations, and significant workplace pressure.
4. Standard work hours must be flexible, will include days, evenings, and weekends, may be greater
than 40 hours per week, and may be called to report to duty at any time.
5. There is no residency requirement for this position.
