JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Fire Department Intern Reports to: Deputy Fire Chief
Dept/Div: Fire Direct Reports: None
Union Status: Non-Represented FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Grade: Seasonal
JOB PURPOSE: A Fire Department Intern assists in all areas within the Department as assigned, under the
direct supervision of staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Learns and explores all aspects of the Fire Department.
2. Assists with patient care as directed by fire department personnel.
3. Assists in performing station maintenance and routine house duties.
4. Assists Fire Prevention with public education programs, community relations activates and other
emergency response related activities for schools, the public, and businesses as assigned.
5. Assists Fire Prevention with educating the public on fire safety/prevention by providing presentations at
daycares, schools, businesses and community organizations and answering questions from the general
public.
6. Assists with certifying required alarm tests, sprinkler system tests, fixed system tests, fire pump acceptance
tests and related activities.
7. Under direct supervision responds with sworn staff to fire and medical calls as directed and assists with
patient care as directed by fire department personnel based on their EMS certification level in accordance
with department policies and protocols.
8. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Internship is open to current high school seniors, undergraduate or graduate students, with plans to pursue
a career in an EMS or fire related field.
2. Currently enrolled in or have recently completed an approved EMS or fire education program.
3. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver’s License and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy.
4. Certifications: Certified in Health Care Provider CPR.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment.
2. Able to operate and use all fire department equipment and apparatus.
3. Responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress.
4. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic
devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may
be encountered.
2. Will be exposed to darkness and poor lighting, fumes/odors, isolation, moving machinery, noise, visual
strain, unprotected heights, wearing a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus, working on
uneven ground, mechanical hazards, biological hazards, medical hazards, electrical hazards, traffic
hazards, possible explosion, and bodily injury.
3. May be exposed to significant workplace pressure.
4. Standard work hours must be flexible and include evenings and weekends.
5. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within Waukee Public Safety building.
6. There is no residency requirement for this position.
