HomeMy WebLinkAboutPW - Meter Technician Meter Technician Page 1 Council Approval 05/15/2023 Revised 7/2023 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Meter Technician Reports to: Gas Superintendent Dept/Div: Gas/Water Direct Reports: None Pay Grade: N24 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Meter Technician inspects, maintains and repairs the municipal natural gas and water distribution system meters, responds to customer service calls, removes and installs gas and water meters and promotes natural gas safety. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Performs work in a safe manner complying with all applicable safety rules, regulations and procedures while protecting self, and all others from injury. 2. Installs, repairs and inspects water meters, meter pits, and meter reading equipment; keeps work records of repairs and tests of meters, meter locations, parts and meter inventories. 3. Performs gas meter bracket inspections. 4. Installs, repairs, and inspects gas meters, meter reading equipment, turns on gas meters, performs no-flow checks, and adjusts gas meters for proper delivery pressure. 5. Posts gas and water customer notifications for disconnection and responds to customer inquiries. 6. Ensures proper inventory of meter-related equipment and parts; orders parts, supplies, and equipment as required. 7. Plows snow during regular business hours and after hours during snow emergencies. 8. Responds to emergency and on-call situations for any Public Works Division in a timely manner. 9. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Attend administrative, department, and team meetings as scheduled. 8. Interact effectively, professionally, and tactfully with the general public. 9. Perform in a self-directed manner. 10. Demonstrate sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner. 11. Contribute to overall City effectiveness by providing critical staff support to task forces and by participating, as necessary, in assisting all other teams. 12. Attentive to the City’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City policies and procedures. 13. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in software required to complete the functions of the position. 14. Ability to read various maps, plats, and construction plans. 15. Able to perform basic arithmetic and keep accurate and complete records. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Water Distribution 1 or ability to obtain within two years from date of hire. 3. Gas Operator Qualified Certification or ability to obtain within two years from date of hire. 4. Combination of two years of technical training and/or relevant work experience required. 5. Must possess a valid Class B Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsements or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire and meet the requirements of the City’s motor vehicle policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to regularly lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move more than 75 pounds. 2. Able to move objects weighing over 50 pounds using assistive devices multiple times during the day. 3. Able to enter manholes. 4. Able to climb different types of ladders and stairs. 5. Able to enter and work in confined space with proper training and personal protective equipment (PPEs). 6. Must have an acute sense of smell to readily detect an unsafe environment. 7. Able to maneuver in undeveloped areas or uneven surfaces for up to one mile in various types of weather. 8. Must be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, businesses and community members. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 2. Subject to on-call duties and emergency call-ins. 3. May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed. 4. During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud. 5. Position requires travel within and outside of the City, which imposes common travel hazards. 6. Standard work hours will be Monday-Friday 7:00AM – 3:30PM with occasional hours including evenings, overnights, and weekends as required. 7. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Works Building. 8. The employee in this position is required to reside within a 30-minute radius of the City limits due to the need to respond to emergency calls in a timely manner to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Waukee.
