HomeMy WebLinkAboutLIB - Assistant Director - Library Assistant Director – Library Page 1 Library Board Approved 2-13-2024 Council approved 2-20-2024 City of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Assistant Director - Library Reports to: Library Director Dept/Div: Library Direct Reports: All Youth, Adult, and Public Grade: L40 Services, and Outreach staff FLSA Status: Exempt JOB PURPOSE: The Assistant Director works under the guidance of the Library Director to supervise and coordinate all library departments with the most public-facing interactions. This position requires flexibility, collaboration, communication, and the ability to identify priorities and shift focus quickly. In order to help fulfill the Library's mission, the Assistant Director has a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and enjoys working with people. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Works with the Library Director to implement a strategic vision for the library’s patron experience, budget, library policies, and procedures; oversees diverse programming for all ages. 2. Manages Public Services, Adult Services, Youth Services and Outreach staff. Responsible for hiring/firing, training, evaluating, leading and directing activities according to standard library operating procedures. 3. Creates and maintains staff schedules, filling in for direct reports when necessary. 4. Provides quality customer service, readers’ advisory, new patron orientation and ongoing patron education, and answers patron’s reference questions. 5. Responds to staff and patrons in a timely manner, resolving issues according to library policies and procedures. 6. Assists the Library Director in the management of library operations within the framework of the City of Waukee and Library Board of Trustees. 7. Assists in policy creation, preparation and administration of the library budget, evaluation of library needs and formulating short and long range plans, including staffing and facilities planning. 8. Manages and complies with annual budget allotments. 9. Compiles statistics and reports as directed. 10. Performs duties of the Director when assigned. 11. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Ability to foster collaboration, build consensus, and recommend solutions in response to organizational challenges or problems. 3. Acknowledges and accepts the Library’s mission, respects the Library’s confidentiality regulations and maintains the integrity of the Waukee Public Library. 4. Maintains knowledge of current holdings and library resources, both print and electronic. 5. Continually seeks and participates in opportunities for continuing education and professional growth. 6. Improves the effectiveness and efficiency of all library operations with positive and creative approaches to challenges. 7. Working knowledge of current electronic devices, Internet tools, social media and library related technology and trends, and the ability to embrace the challenge of continuously learning new tools, software and technology to meet typical library needs. 8. Demonstrates sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments in a timely manner. 9. Understands and internalizes the importance of seeking resolution to problems and concerns by bringing them to the direct attention of supervisor in a timely manner. Ability to exercise independent judgement to creatively solve problems and negotiate stressful situations in a positive manner. 11. Attentive to the City’s and the Library’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City and Library policies and procedures. 12. Represents the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons. 13. Demonstrates a positive attitude, and cultural sensitivity in working with a diverse public and coworkers. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or closely related field required. 2. Five years of public library work experience required with increasing responsibility. 3. Three years of experience supervising, coaching and developing staff required. 4. Possess and maintain Iowa State Library Certification Level IV, or ability to obtain within the first year of employment required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds. 2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community. 4. Access to transportation with insurance at required state levels to conduct business throughout the assigned area. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required. 2. Standard work hours with flexibility to work occasional evening and weekend hours. 3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Library building.
