JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Teen Services Librarian
Dept/Div: Library
Pay Range: L33
Reports to: Assistant Library Director
Direct Reports: Occasionally Youth Services and other
library staff and volunteers
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE: The Teen Services Librarian works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director to plan
and perform programs for tweens and teens, ages 12-18, and assists all patrons with routine
library tasks. In order to help fulfill the Library's mission, the Teen Services Librarian has a positive
attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and enjoys working with people, especially teens and
tweens.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. With direction from the Assistant Library Director, plans, presents and evaluates diverse and creative services
and programs for tweens and teens ages 12-18. These services and programs may be held in the library, off-
site, and online.
2. Provides occasional support for children’s programs as part of the Youth Services Department.
3. Assists with development of youth oriented content or website and social media outlets.
4. Assists the Assistant Library Director with management of the teen collections by selecting, ordering and
weeding assigned materials in accordance with library policies and budget.
5. Provides quality customer service, readers’ advisory, new patron orientation and ongoing patron education, and
answers reference questions to all patrons.
6. Helps develop and maintain inviting and functional youth library areas.
7. Represents the library at various community events.
8. Fosters and strengthens relationships with community partners including schools, city agencies and other
organizations serving teens.
9. Performs work within established guidelines and refers department questions and concerns to the Assistant
Library Director in a timely manner.
10. Responsible for the coordination, supervision and training of teen volunteers as needed.
11. Occasionally serve as the staff member in charge, providing leadership to address emergencies, safety issues,
and patron feedback.
12. Completes other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

4. Exhibit considerable knowledge of the needs, developmental stages and abilities of teens.
5. Maintains knowledge of current holdings and library resources, both print and electronic.
6. Maintains considerable knowledge of teen literature and materials.
7. Working knowledge of current electronic devices, Internet tools, social media and library related technology and
trends, and the ability to embrace the challenge of continuously learning new tools, software and technology to
meet typical library needs.
8. Continually seeks and participates in opportunities for continuing education and professional growth.
9. Improves the effectiveness and efficiency of all library operations with positive and creative approaches to
challenges.
10. Demonstrates sound time-management skills by effectively and efficiently organizing, prioritizing, and
completing multiple assignments in a timely manner.

11. Demonstrates a working knowledge of routine library practices.
12. Understands and internalizes the importance of seeking resolution to problems and concerns by bringing them
to the direct attention of supervisor in a timely manner.
13. Ability to exercise independent judgement to creatively solve problems and negotiate stressful situations in a
positive manner.
14. Be attentive to the City’s and the Library’s standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all
City and Library policies and procedures.
15. Represents the City professionally and effectively to the community and library patrons.
16. Demonstrates a positive attitude, and cultural sensitivity in working with a diverse public and coworkers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelors degree in Library and Information Science, or Child Development, or closely related field required.
2. Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or closely related field preferred.
3. Two years of public library work experience in teen or youth services required.
4. Possess and maintain Iowa State Library Certification Level IV, or ability to obtain within the first year of
employment required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Required to move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds.
2. Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or
detailed paperwork.
3. Be able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using
electronic and handwritten) in English with other employees, library patrons, and the community.
4. Access to transportation with insurance at required state levels to conduct business throughout the assigned
area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Climate-controlled office with hazards typical of that environment, minimal outdoor work is required.
2. Standard work hours with flexibility to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
3. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours
within the Waukee Public Library building.
