JUNE 5,2002
(1)Call to Order -The special meeting of the Waukee City Council was called to order by
Mayor Leslie at 6:02 PM.
(2)Roll Call-The following members were present:Mayor Mark D.Leslie,and Council
members Nicholas Gruber,Bill Peard and Wayne Johnson present.Council members Mike
Watts and Don Bailey,Jr.absent.
(3)Mayor's Report -Mayor Leslie corrected the date for the Citizen of the Year
reception.Rather than the 19th ofJune at 7 o'clock,it will be held the 18th ofJune,7
0'clock.All are welcome to attend.Another correction in building permits:year to date
Waukee is up 59%;the month of May was 13%.
(4)Discussion:Discussion of mat erial to be distributed in Washington,D.C.during meeting
with legislators and legislators'designees General discussion covered schedule of activities,
prepared material for distribution and the roles of various council men.(1)The City is one of the
sponsors ofthe New View Reception.Mayor Pro Tern Peard will present welcoming remarks.
Dierck Oosten,who had spoken with Don Bailey,Jr.,indicated that Mr.Bailey felt we should
communicate with the former Iowans who have been present at this reception in the past.Mr.
Oosten stressed going out with an agenda that being to make as many contacts and collect as
much information as possible from the former Iowans present.(2)During the discussion of
materials,Mr.Gunderson indicated that he would like to maintain a narrower focus so that the
concept of Waukee and the interchange is paramount.Mr.Peard suggested being prepared to
discuss related information not in the material.Mr.Johnson suggested using quotes from the
DM Register indicating the growth of the area and the community support.Mayor Leslie
indicated he felt we should 1)show we're working closely with neighboring communities and 2)
we have strong community support of growth and development.Mr.Johnson indicated that the
message should be that we need to increase our commercial base in order to develop the City.
Our commercial base comes from the interchange.Mr.Oosten indicated that although we are
the fastest growing,we have received the least amount of federal funds and are due.It is also
important to identify funds previously received from the MPO.Mayor Leslie stressed that for
two years the interchange has been rated a No.1 MPO project.Discussion continued with other
suggestions to improve the materials including bullet points,letters of support from citizens of
Waukee,and developing the recap where support of surrounding communities is mentioned.
Invitations to the Waukee July 4th Celebration will be distributed to legislators and staffers.(3)
Roles of the participants in various meetings was discussed.Mayor Pro Tern Peard will be the
lead spokesperson for the group.After the initial remarks,the discussion will generally be
informal,
At this time Mayor Leslie asked for a motion to adjourn.Nick Gruber moved.Wayne Johnson
second.Ayes:all.Nays:None.Motion carried 3-0.
