JOINT MEETING WITH WAUKEE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

(1)Call to Order -The joint meeting ofthe Waukee City Council with the Waukee
Community School Board was called to order by School Board President Embrey
Edgington at 7:35PM.School Board members present were Bill Daggett,Kevin
Vinchattle,Embrey Edgington,Tracy Lepeltek,Karen Oberman and Russ Wiesely.
(2)School Agenda Items
(3)Roll Call -The following City Council members were present:Mayor Tony
Oberman,and Council members Nicholas Gruber,Bill Peard,Mike Watts and Darlene
Stanton.Council member Don Bailey,Jr.absent.
(4)Discussion:Determine Areas of Mutual Interest The Council and Board members,
city and school staff discussed the National AAU Junior Olympics and shared athletic
facilities.
National AAU Junior Olympics:Agreed to put together a group of board
members,council members,city and school staff,community members,organization
representatives as a "leadership"or "steering"committee to guide the preparation for and
the week long Junior Olympics during the last week ill July.It was suggested by a
member of the group that the Metro School Authority be invited to participate in our
discussions so as to get the insight of someone who has hosted the Junior Olympics in
previous years.The Junior Olympics staff could also be invited to attend.Board
member Tracy Lepeltek mentioned providing information to the hotel/motel organization.
Nick Gruber suggested working with surrounding communities for steeling committee
input and voltmteers.Parking,traffic flow,entertainment for one evening,food vendors
were topics of discussion with the City.Superintendent Stalker indicated they could have
a list of individuals who would participate in the steering committee for the next school
board meeting.Mark Arentsen indicated the city would have a list of committee
members in one or two weeks.
Shared Facilities:Superintendent Stocker mentioned the need for more tennis
courts and the possibility of the City sharing in the repair or construction of 5 -8 tennis
courts,Council member Gruber suggested revisiting the shared use of Centennial Park
and discussed the proposed recreation area west of Waukee.The school board shared a
lot of general information relative to their growth,building plans and athletic activities.
Mayor Oberman suggested that the council and board should be proactive in meeting and
sharing information so that plans or projects related to current development could be
planned so as to be beneficial to both city and school.
Shared Programs and Staff:School board member Russ Wiesely mentioned that
we had not yet discussed continuing education or community education and promoting
life long leaming.Mr.Wiesely suggested continuing this topic to the next meeting.
(5)Motion:Setting date for next meeting with school board.The members of the group
sensed that neither the school board nor the city council were ready to propose a course
of action or to establish a timeline.However,it was the general consensus that the board
and the city would work together on various projects meeting as a group of the whole two
or four times a year and meeting as necessary for the connnittees spun off from the group
for the various projects.A motion was not voted upon.J

Mayor Oberman asked for a motion to adjourn.Nick Gruber moved.Bill Peard second.
Ayes:All.Nays:None.Motion carried 4-0.
