HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-06-07-Ordinance 2666_Charter Amendment, Mayoral Term of OfficeORDINANCE NO.2666 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE CITY CHARTER TO EXTEND THE TERM OF F l' OFFICE OF THE MAYOR FROM A TWO (2)YEAR TERM TO A FOUR (4)YEAR TERM COMMENCING WITH THE TERM BEGINNING JANUARY 1,2012 BY AMENDING PARAGRAPH 6 OF THE CHARTER AS CODIFIED AT SECTION 101.6 OF WAUKEE MUNICIPAL CODE (2010). J WHEREAS,the City Charter currently specifies a two (2)year term for the office of Mayor in paragraph 6 of the City Charter adopted by the City on October 15,1973 as codified in section 101.6 of the Waukee Municipal Code (2010);and WHEREAS,the City Council of the City of Waukee believes that the public will be better served through a four year tenn of office of the Mayor;and WHEREAS,Iowa law provides that the City Charter may be amended by the City Council through the adoption of an Ordinance,and provides that a petition may be submitted in accordance with Iowa Code section 372.11(2)within 30 days of publication of the Ordinance,requiring the submission of the issue of said amendment to the voters at a special city election. BE IT THEREFORE ORDAINED by the City Council ofthe City of Waukee: Section 1.Paragraph 6 of the City Charter adopted October 15,1973 as codified in section 101.6 of the Waukee Municipal Code should be and the same is hereby amended to provide as 1 follows: 101.6 TERM OF MAYOR.Effective with the term commencing January 1,2012,the Mayor is elected for a term of four years. Section 2.Repealer.All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with the provisions ofthis ordinance are hereby repealed. Section 3.Severability Clause.If any section,provision or part of this ordinance shall be adjudged invalid or unconstitutional,such adjudication shall not affect the validity of the ordinance as a whole or any section,provisions or part thereof not adjudged invalid or unconstitutional, Section 4.Effective Date.This ordinance shall be in effect from and after its final passage,approval and publication as provided by law.
