JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Community Development Specialist Reports to: Community Development Director
Dept/Div: Community Development Direct Reports: None
Grade: N23 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE: The Community Development Specialist provides customer service for the public and the
Community Development Department staff including tasks related to zoning, subdivision
regulations, new construction and other development activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provides exceptional customer service responding to questions from the general public, developers,
consultants, builders, realtors, and representatives of other governmental entities who telephone or enter
Waukee City Hall.
2. Processes building permits, collecting permit fees and preparing and mailing Certificates of Occupancy.
3. Schedules building inspections providing for efficient use of inspectors’ time and meeting the needs of the
customer.
4. Performs administrative functions associated with rental inspections including scheduling bi-annual
inspections; administering the application, fees and permit processes; and maintaining a current active
rental data base.
5. Ensures the City website contains current and accurate information from the Community Development
Department.
6. Attends and acts as Secretary for all meetings of the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Board of
Adjustment and the Board of Appeals.
7. Reviews, ensures accuracy, and organizes for efficient retrieval of records and reports relating to platting.
8. Provides written communications on behalf of the Community Development Director, Building Official,
Building Inspectors, Code Compliance Officer, Planning Coordinator and Economic Development
Coordinator.
9. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

8. Safeguard confidential information and use it or disclose it only as expressly authorized or specifically
required in the course of performing specific job duties.
9. Represent the Department professionally and effectively to the community and Department members.
10. Attentive to City and Department standards for customer service, accuracy, quality, efficiency and all City
and Department policies and procedures ensuring that all work performed meets those standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Associates Degree in business or a related field or a combination of four years education and related work
experience required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
2. Experience in public sector or development area preferred.

3. Maintain Notary Public certification.
4. Cheerful and courteous phone skills as well as good customer service and communication skills.
5. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and data base management.
6. Confident in the use of computers and tablets and able to be trained in Incode, Permit and other software
required to complete the functions of the position.
