HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire - Captain ApprovedCity of Waukee JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Fire Captain (Career) Reports to: Fire Chief Dept/Div: Fire Direct Reports: Lieutenants, Inspector, Union Status: Non -Represented Firefighters Pay Grade: N3 FLSA Status: Exempt -Administrative JOB PURPOSE: The Fire Captain supervises personnel during emergency and non -emergency operations, and maintains station, equipment and apparatus to appropriate level of readiness. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.) 1. Leads and directs the Fire Department staff through selection, orientation, training, performance management and discipline according to standard operating procedures, City policy and departmental rules and regulations. 2. Directs and assumes control of the fire department in the absence of the Chief. 3. Assumes "Command" (Incident Management System) of the emergency scene until formally relieved through transfer of command. 4. Plans, develops implements, instructs, and maintains fire training programs, including participation in regular training during the evening shift. 5. Locates, researches, reviews and introduces new techniques, knowledge and equipment relating to the advancement of the fire service. 6. Completes or ensures that required forms are completed, including but not limited to incident reports and maintenance forms. 7. Lead and directs completion of projects as assigned. 8. Responds to fire and rescue calls as needed or directed and performs suppression and patient care related activities in compliance with department Standard Operating Guidelines and directives. 9. Reviews apparatus in general and ensures that proper maintenance steps are performed and Is responsible for post -run check of apparatus to ensure readiness. 10. Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned. SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Attend administrative, department and team meetings as scheduled. 10. Work as a team leader and/or commander under stress caused by emergencies, danger and criticism. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's degree preferred. 2. Five years of fire and Emergency Management Systems (EMS) experience in a combination department. 3. Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy. 5. Certifications: Firefighter II (IFSAC), Fire Instructor I (IFSAC), Fire Officer I (IFSAC), Hazardous Materials - Operations (IFSAC), Current Paramedic certification issued by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Current Healthcare Provider CPR, ACLS, and PEEP or PALS. FEMA IS-100 and IS-200 (or IS-195), ICS- 300, ICS-400, IS-700, and ICS-800. 6. Knowledge of Waukee Fire Department and City of Waukee policies and Standard Operating Guidelines; understanding of local and national fire codes, building construction, and fire behavior; knowledge of appropriate training standards; knowledge of hazardous materials response; knowledge of emergency driving techniques. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Able to pass the Waukee Physical Agility Test at any time during employment. 2. Able to perform all essential functions of the position while wearing required protective equipment. 3. Able to operate and use all fire department equipment and apparatus. 4. Responsive to visual and verbal alarms and other indications of distress. 5. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, staff, colleagues, elected officials and the general public. 6. Able to effectively communicate orally (in person and over the telephone) and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees and the community. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered. 2. Will be exposed to darkness and poor lighting, fumes/odors, isolation, moving machinery, noise, visual strain, unprotected heights, wearing a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus, working on uneven ground, mechanical hazards, biological hazards, medical hazards, electrical hazards, traffic hazards, possible explosion, and bodily injury. 3. Will be exposed to significant work place pressure. 4. Standard work hours must be flexible and include evenings and weekends. 5. To successfully fulfill the essential functions of this position, employee must maintain standard work hours within Waukee Public Safety Building. 6.
